Ionia is a small town in Michigan, located on the Ionia Peninsula. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wyoming Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Ionia were farmers and their families who arrived in 1837 from Georgian Bay, Ontario. The name Menominee derived from a word meaning "Island of Isles" and refers to an area near present-day Ionia Township. George Washington Carver came to Ionia in 1884 as a teacher and learned how to grow cotton on his farm before moving to Detroit to open a school there. In 1902, work began on the first schools in what are now Ionia Township and Battle Creek Township; these were built by local residents with federal help under the auspices of the Department of Education. By 1923, all but one school had been built or finished, making it one of the largest school districts in Michigan. One major event that took place in Ionia during this time was World War II when many people left their homes for military service; however, most of them returned home after hostilities ended. In 1945, with war ending and Victory through Service Day coming up, downtown renamed itself Veterans Day Square in honor of those who had served our country during wartime. Today there are many businesses operating within Downtown Ionia including several banks along with restaurants and cafes such as BrewDog Brewery and Pizzeria Nero which have become some of Midtown's most popular venues due to their delicious food options as well as great atmosphere (think rustic/industrial style decor). Ionia is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Ionia County. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is one of three cities in Ionia County and its Combined Statistical Area, which has a population of 15,512 as of 2015.[1] The village that once stood near where Ionia now stands was founded by fur traders in 1812 as Fort Gratiot. The first settler to arrive in what is now Ionia Township was Solomon Hubbard in 1814, when he built a cabin on the east side of what is now State Road 12 south of present day downtown Ionia. In 1824, Hubbard married Ann Wills and they started to cultivate land around their cabin. In 1830, they moved to what is today State Road 22 southwest of downtown and started a small grocery store called the Hubbs'. A few years later they moved again to what is today State Road 12 east of town limits but continued to operate their grocery store until 1904 when it closed down due to economic depression. Hubbard also served as mayor from 1886-1892 and 1896-1900; he was first elected only after running against incumbent Elijah Broughton who had been refused service on an election committee because he did not have enough property qualification for membership on that body[2]. The first post office in Ionia opened on December 16th 1826 with General Gage Post serving as receiver[3]. At this time there were only three settlements within modern-day Ionia Township: Fort Gratiot (now part of Detroit), Hubbardstown (now part of Battle Creek) and Gratiot Heights (now part of Mason). On February 14th 1830, Alfred Pohlman became the first postmaster at Gratiot Heights; Pohlman operated his business outfitted with a stage coach capable of carrying mail upriver[4]. Unfortunately for Pohlman, postal services were discontinued with the opening upstages along river routes during the Panic Of 1837 which caused great financial losses for many entrepreneurs including Pohlman[5][6][7]. Throughout most or all Michigan counties during this time period there were no real means for citizens to send mail other than through wagon trainsaddlerettes laden with packages picked up by barge from towns along rivers or delivered by horseback riders overland using pack horses or wagons pulled by oxen or mules; however, because this system worked hand-in-hand with regular local elections held every two years it generally kept governmentRunning smoothly without much need for outside help[8][9][10]. In 1840 John Dyer opened a blacksmith shop across from current day US 21 west bank opposite Woodward Avenue; Dyer continued operations until about 1865 when he sold his shop to Ebenezer Hirschfeld who operated it until about 1870 when it went into foreclosure[11]; Hirschfeld then donated it back to the city government who used it as an overflow shelter during World War II[12], before finally abandoning it around 1951 due to damage sustained from high winds associated with Hurricane Diana)[13] This building currently stands abandoned adjacentto Ford Field just northwest cornerof Woodward Ave& Indiana St.(right next door To old Masonic Lodge)

Thomson and named after mythical island in Scotland that he sighted while exploring what is now Minnesota Territory. Thomson had been researching an area for a new commercial port on Ionia Island when he discovered the land between Marquette and Mackinac Bridge across the Straits of Mackinac. He bought it from a group of Native Americans for $2 per acre (the first white person to do so). The town was platted in 1837 and erected its first schoolhouse in 1840; Thomson also built a courthouse and jail within two years of its incorporation.
