Ionia is a municipality in the U.S. state of Michigan, with a population of 5,848 as of the 2010 census. The population was 7,907 at the 2013 census. Ionia is located in Bay County on the eastern shore of Lake Superior, about 20 miles north-northeast of Grand Rapids and 30 miles south-southwest of Lansing. The village dates back to 1825 when it was known as "Island Grove". Ionia's first post office was established in 1828 and its first store opened in 1830. The village name change came about because it was on an island in the lake and people could only walk around it. In 1852, the village became part of present-day Bay City when that township took over most of whose land including Island Grove. The original town meetinghouse still stands today and is used occasionally for community meetings and other events. In 1898, Ionia joined with nearby Holland Township to form what would become Bay City Township (later Muskegon Heights). On July 1, 1908, all three townships were merged into present-day Bay City through an act by then-Governor James Kieft which also created Ionia Township which included much of what is now east side Maplewood neighborhood on Ottawa Road between Woodward Avenue and East Main Street but did not include all or parts of what are now west side Maplewood neighborhood on Woodward Avenue between East Main Street and Ottawa Road due to their location near Grand Rapids Airport/Grand Valley State University campus; those areas were annexed by neighboring Holland Township effective January 1st following that year's merger vote by a 3–2 margin - one member absent (John Dvorak) - making Ionia one half of a new city with a total population exceeding 10,000 until that time: only Hastings (10K), Ann Arbor (12K), Livonia (14K), Novi(16K), Sterling Heights (18K) had populations over 10k before becoming cities while other smaller towns continued to serve as villages until they too were annexed by larger municipalities during this period dubbed "merger mania". On October 15th 1928 residents voted overwhelmingly to rename their town after Mount Pleasant Township's second mayor John Pritzker who had died suddenly two weeks earlier at age 53 from pneumonia at his home just days before the referendum taking place after he had been elected unopposed to succeed him despite being term limited out as Mayor because he had served four years instead than six like his predecessor Hargrave who had served two terms due to failing health; this event marked his first full term as Mayor even though he technically served five months since he took office on November 12th 1923 after John Aiken won election unopposed resulting from Hargrave's term limits running out less than three months prior effective December 31st 1922 having been elected November 17th 1921 defeating incumbent Arthur Fenton who resigned due to ill health; prior to his election John Pritzker had unsuccessfully run for office for both houses in 1920 & 1924 thus serving twice under four different governors including Warren Harding & Calvin Coolidge In 1933 a major fire destroyed most businesses within sight or reach inside downtown Ionian so efforts were made by then Municipal President George Schorr along with later President Pro Tem Donny Deutschmanns working together through Community Affairs Committee Chairman Harry Coyle Jr., Director Harry Molnar & Vice Chairman Roy Jaspers to initiate fund raising efforts such as bake sales throughout November intending ultimately forestalling any loss suffered during these devastating fires Government sponsored insurance companies paid for many times replacement value items such as kitchen cabinets etc.; yet another example illustrating how government support functionsed effectively within municipal boundaries during this time period In 1938 Govt purchased remaining land comprising today’s downtown area from lumberyard owner Jennings family – giving them 99% ownership essentially allowing them complete control over Downtown business district restrictions still governing access onto main streets prohibiting parking on 4th Ave S & E corner lots currently restricted thru zoning variances still extant strollingown pattern similar but less extensive recently completed Renaissance Center project adjacent providing more contiguous mixed use development featuring high end restaurants/cafes etc.; landmark building formerly occupied by local steel smelter no longer standing now dedicated exclusively TO THE CITY OF ISLAND GROVE PARKING LOT expansion program initiated subsequent thereto comprehensive public works project consisting 2 phases totaling $27 million funded largely thru dollars raised via various pledge drives spearheaded primarily thru participation/cooperation from citizens Numerous street closures necessary during construction including several blocks roundabouts will occur resulting some street changes noted below please read entire document for complete details! In fact, even today some pistols are still being produced using traditional methods like hand-fitting and forging instead of electronic ignition systems. Ionia, Michigan is a small town in the lower peninsula of Michigan. The population was 2,838 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids-Muskegon-Holland county suburbia. The community is located on Ionia Peninsula, between Muskegon Bay and Lake Huron. The first European settlers in what is now Ionia were Frenchmen who arrived there during the 17th century. They named their settlement "Lac des Anglais" after English colonists who had landed there a year earlier. In 1814, an act of Congress designated Ionia as a port for troops stationed at Fort Mackinac on the Upper Peninsula. During World War II, Ionia became home to one of the many military airfields used by United States forces in Europe and North Africa. After the war, much of Ionia's commercial development took place in downtown Muskegon Heights until that area was replaced by new development around its current bounds in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Ionia has experienced numerous natural disasters over the years: several floods which left much damage; numerous hurricanes which destroyed or damaged many homes; tornadoes which have killed more people than any other natural disaster; ice storms which caused extensive power outages; and earthquakes that have injured or killed more people than any other natural event

Ionia is one of the fastest growing cities in Michigan and has seen growth in both its population and economy over the past decade. The first settlers to Ionia were a group of Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1837. They built a cabin on an island in the river that later became Ionia Township. In 1868, General Motors began production at their new factory on Mackinac Island and attracted many workers to Ionia to work on their new plant. The city grew rapidly during this time with numerous businesses opening up and jobs being created for locals and immigrants alike. In 1955, GM announced they would be moving their entire manufacturing operations from Detroit to Ann Arbor due to economic concerns around world competition. Due to this decision, much of Ionia's downtown area lost its jobs but also saw significant construction progress take place such as the enlargement of Macomb County Stadium which now houses several professional sports teams as well as other commercial development activities like a shopping mall, movie theater, skatepark, and more! During the late 1990s through 2000s recession when most metropolitan areas experienced downturns throughout America, Ionia experienced rapid growth; however by 2007 it had again begun to experience some economic challenges due primarily to changes within local government caused by term limits for mayor/council members (see: Mayor Joe Petri scandal). However despite these challenges & protests by citizens & opposition from business owners (& political establishment) against further growth & expansion though annexation into Battle Creek Metropolitan Area (& other nearby communities), by 2013-2015 total population had increased 5% while median household income had grown 10%. This phenomenal double digit increase was largely attributed to an influx of international students who were drawn near Flint after Hurricane Flint made landfall there making education more affordable than ever before (& also increasing job opportunities).
