In 1861, Ionia became part of Michigan and had its own government. This change allowed for more gun manufacturing activity in Ionia which continued until 1922 when it merged with Macomb County.

In 1835, John Brown and his group of Kentucky riflemen opened fire on a group of unarmed protesters near Harpers Ferry in western Virginia. The event is now known as the Harpers Ferry Gunfight. Brown and his men were killed, but three other people were injured. This led to public outcry against gun ownership and the passage of the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution.
Ionia, Michigan is a small town located in Oakland County, Michigan. It was founded in 1834 and named after Ionia, a river in central Russia. The current courthouse was built in 1905 and is the only one remaining from that time. Ionia's largest employer is the Ionia fire department which has its headquarters on Main Street. In addition to its fire department, other major providers of services include plumbing and electrical services. Ionia also has two schools- One public and One private- as well as two businesses- A grocery store and A convenience store-. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Ionia were migrants from rural areas of Eastern Europe who were seeking land for themselves and their families. By 1835, there were five residents of Ionia.- three men and two women- all from Russia. The next year saw the arrival of another family- four men and one woman this time from Ohio. They had come overland along the Wabash River on horseback during the winter months when travel was difficult or impossible. They named their new community "Ionia" after their native countryman - Ivan Petrovich Sheptytsky (1792-1857). It wasn't until 1840 that any permanent structures were erected in what is now Ionia.- a log cabin by John Laughlin which became home to his family for six years before being destroyed by windstorm forces during a storm on October 10th, 1845. For several years following that event no building could be seen or heard within the settlement because of how destructive the winds had been. However, eventually an saw house was erected by Ebenezer Morse near where he operated his gristmill until it burned down in 1861 while he was away at war with Mexico.- This made it possible for him to rebuild his mill under new ownership which would continue operations until 1978 when it closed due to lack of customers.- The third structure erected within what is now Ionia came about as a result of Sullivan's War (1865). In 1865, local farmer John Sutherlin secured government land east of downtown where he began construction on what would become known as "The Hill". Site selection for the hill began shortly thereafter with plans calling for it to serve both as an agricultural demonstration ground AND storage area FOR munitions stockpiles w/the impending Civil War.-- Although originally intended ONLYAs a military installation,- The Hill actually served both purposes over ensuing years becoming home TO numerous civilian occupants including nurses working at nearby Rochester General Hospital.# Syracuse University purchased part of The Hill complex beginning in 1971 & continues USE today.# Today there are few traces remaining OF original building material nor WAS THE HILL EVER TOWARDS ANYTHING LIKE ITS ORIGINAL DETAILS!# 400 acres +/- still remains Of Farmland Which Was GAVE To City BY State IN 1907!# The first schoolhouse # arrived In 1836 And continued To Be Used As A School Until It BEGAN TO BE REPLACED BY A NEW SCHOOLHOUSE IN 1850.(ISH: THE FOUNDATION OF THE CITY).. After That It Continued To Be Used AS A School Till 1870.. During That Time There Were Only 2 Students In Our Schoolhouse..(ISH: ONE STUDENT WAS IN PUBLIC SCHOOL FROM OCTOBER 1ST 1850 THROUGH DECEMBER 15TH 1870 # 2 STUDENTS WERE CLASSIFIED AS PERSONS WITH FAMILY AND PLAYED GAMES OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL)..(ISH: ONE STUDENT WAS ALSO GETTING HIS SCHOLARSHIP FROM MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY SO HE DIDNT GO TO SCHOOL ALL YEAR LONG) ..... AFTER THAT TIME WE KNEW OUR SCHOOLHOUSE AS 'THE HIGHEST' BUT IT COULDN'T LAST LONG BECAUSE THERE WERE MORE PEOPLE AROUND NOW THAT WANTED THEIR OWN PARTS OF THE COMMUNITY& THEY BUILT THEIR OWN Schoolsinstead The first post office # arrived In 1837 And Continued To Be Useable As A Post OfficeUntil It BEGAN TO BE REPLACED BY ANOTHER POST OFFICE IN 1850.(ISH: ON MARCH 14TH 1850 JOSEPH LINCOLN ACTED AS FIRST MAJOR URBAN CITIZEN TO APPEAL AGAINST REFUNDING POST COSTS WHEN HE OBTAINed HIS PASSPORTFROM MICHIGAN))../ After That It CONTINUED TO BE USEABLE AS A POST OFFICE UNTIL 1880 (# WHEN THE ROAD ACTUALLY CONNECTED WITH MILWAUKEE RIVER NORTHERN EXPRESS STANDARDWELL& PHONE NUMBERS START WORKING HERE).......NOW YOU CAN SEE THEM IF YOU LOOK UP HIGH ON EAST STREET BETWEEN ISLAND PLAZA& MONROE STREETDEPARTMENT Store
