The first permanent settler in what is now Ionia was James Weldon who arrived with his family on July 9, 1824 from Canaan township in York county, Pennsylvania under contract with John Dutton for three years Land valuation 1/4$ an acre . James Weldon established a farmstead on this site which he named "Weldonstown." A year later he sold his holdings back to Dutton for $1/acre plus interest at 5% per annum payable quarterly until paid off; this deal provided land for future development including present day downtown Ionia which began as an open field adjacent to where Pritchard Street crosses Third Street today.. By 1830 there were more than 30 families living in or around downtown Ioniagua with over 100 acres planted according to Wm Hickey’s map dated 1831... By 1840 only 3 families remained living here scattered among several other settlement sites across what became Macomb County…In 1849 when Midland Community College was founded it moved outgrowing its original location near Livingston but kept many pieces of that campus including buildings likethe Administration Building (now called 'Old Main') which still stands today... In 1951 when Wayne State University was founded it also moved outgrowing its original location nearby but kept much equipment likethe Athletic Department building which still stands today... In 1978 when Midland Community College merged with Wayne State University it also relocated outgrowing its original location nearby becoming known as 'Midland Campus'...Today Downtown Ioniagua enjoys a high level of commercial activity due largely to its proximity to Major League Baseball's Tigers Stadium located just east across First Street from town center...The people here have made their mark on our community by doing everything from working hard during tough times during World War II all the way up until recently playing key roles in developing our economy outside the COMMUNITY CENTER....There are countless things that make life worth living here whether it be spending time outdoors fishing or learning about local history inside one of our many classrooms – all without leaving our tight-knit community atmosphere!

They had three children: Mary (1837–1915), George (1839–1925), and Franklin D., Jr., who succeeded their father as mayor of Ionia in 1902. During World War II, Ionia played an important role as a military base serving both Battle Creek Naval Air Station () inside its limits and Fort Jackson (), outside them; both installations were closed during peace time but reopened during World War II as part of Military Air Transport Service commands activated within Strategic Air Command (). Afterward Ionia became an industrial center focus again on truck manufacturing until recently due to globalization although some small businesses have continued through online sales model like hand mills or pencil sharpers made out of recycled materials like lead or brass etc.).
