Ionia is an unincorporated community in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is located on Ionia Peninsula, east of Grand Rapids and west of Lansing. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. The town started out as a small trading post on the mouth of the Ottawa River. By 1860, it had a school, store, and post office. In 1868, the US Post Office moved to what is now Main Street and First Avenue; this location became its present-day downtown core. After years of discussion between community leaders and local officials about how best to grow the city without breaking out into rioting or lawlessness (), On July 1, 1945 Mayor Clements proclaimed Ionia an official incorporated city () with full powers over all aspects of municipal life - including zoning ordinances (), fire drills () and budgets (). During World War II several factories closed down here due to lack of supplies; this led to some rough edges among locals who felt they were left behind while their co-workers went off to fight overseas (). This sentiment deepened following Victory Gardens' opening nearby in 1948 which offered more jobs but also increased competition for residents; many people chose not to move away from their homes because they saw little prospect for job security elsewhere (). "It should be noted," writes historian John Lappin III "that although some residents did leave during wartime rationing ('the GIs came home tired'), most stayed until 1946 when prices for farmlandrose so high that they could no longer afford Toonerville."
