The community was founded in 1872 as a post office called "Inkster", and its name was changed to "Inkster Township" in 1892. In 1925, it became an incorporated village; it was abolished as an incorporated village in 1957 and reincorporated as a town. The current name comes from John Dorman's suggestion for the new town name after he saw an inkling that other communities nearby might have similar namesakes – such as "Kingston", "Milford", and "Waverly". The first settler in what is now Inkster Township was George Leland who arrived there on October 12th, 1872 with his family from Hancock County, Ohio Territory. Leland had been sent by then President Ulysses S. Grant to survey land grants for settlers on the lower peninsula which would be accessible by railroad crossing from Grand Rapids across Lake Huron into Northwestern Michigan Leland named his township after himself: Inkster Township No 4 (now Gratiot Avenue). This settlement soon came to be known as one of America's earliest self-reliant townships because local farmers were able to provide all they needed including food and water supplies themselves without depending on outside sources like roads or markets that were available only later when larger settlements were established nearby The first store opened up at what is now Gratiot Avenue and Main Street corner back in 1875 It wasn't until 1898 when a post office called "Inkster"opened up within walking distance of present day Gratiot Avenue Elementary School which quickly became known as 'the heart' of town because so many residents used it for mail pickups and deliveries .
