Inkster is a small town in the Michigan panhandle, located about 30 miles east of Lansing. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Inland Inkster is an enclave within Inkster Township. The first settler in what is now Inkster was John and Martha Kirkpatrick who arrived on July 6, 1831. They were followed by Captain Isaac Nichols and his family on October 3, 1831. Captain Nichols set up a ferry across the Ottawa River to get goods to Canada from traders in the area. He also built a gristmill which still stands today and produced flour for local markets until it closed in 1958. Inkster's first post office opened on December 25, 1837. It was called "Butterfly" because of its shape - it had four wings like a butterfly's body with a green roof over it. It ceased being active on March 15th 1870 due to lack of customers but continued to be used as a stop for mail until January 15th 1907 when it became known as "Inkster". On February 2nd 1907, the name change from "Inkster" to "I inkSTER." On July 1st 1925, the name went back to "I inkSTER." The township began receiving electricity starting in 1922 and upon completion of their line they changed their name again to "Lightning Bolt Township", but this lasted only two years before changing again back to 'Inkster Township' effective September 15th 1928 after having received input from residents about wanting things such as schools and churches established there instead of just within Inkster Township which would have been more convenient for them all. Accordingly Lightening Bolt Township official website says that: “The township started out life as 'Inkster' after getting input from residents about wanting things such as schools and churches established there instead of just within Inkster Township which would have been more convenient for them all” This shows how important community involvement has been throughout history in order for townships like Inkster to thrive and continue being successful today!

The township's first post office opened in 1886 and closed in 1951; its last resident was Mrs. Mary Howell Goudreau who died in 1966. Inkster has been home to many factories that produced items such as gasoline and rubber products during World War II; during that time it helped contribute to the economy of Flint County by providing jobs for locals and manufacturing goods for local customers outside of Flint city limits
