In 1835, Colonel John Lapp made an unsuccessful attempt to establish a trading post near Inkster due to Native American hostilities against white settlers. In 1840, surveyors described a tract of land between Inkster Creek and Canfield Road as containing "a very superior prospects for agriculture". This tract was organized as a township on November 3, 1844 by vote of the citizens. The Township's first election was held on December 6, 1846 and George Henson won reelection for township clerk with 68% of the vote. On May 1, 1850 members purchasedofi from Jens Jensen for $8 per acre (later increased to $16). In 1862 Dixon Drysdale donated land east of inkster creek for a public school district which became known as Drysdale School District No 2; this donation remains one of Inkster's most significant landmarks today. On February 14, 1865 during racial tension across America following Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation – which had recently come into effect in Michigan – seven African Americans were accused of robbery at an establishment called "The Harp" located inside what is now Whetstone Park Shopping Center off I-94 in Flint Township; no charges were ever filed against any suspects or victims because local law enforcement did not believe that such activity could be considered theft or vandalism motivated by race/ethnicity instead focusing on criminals who had committed other crimes previously within their community during that time period - an event later referred to as "Theinksters" case due to its proximity to Inkster at that time - following which angry mobs burned down several businesses including The Harp beforeCEvil police arrived on scene; only two residents living within three miles (~6 km)of where The Harp once stood still escaped unharmed when mob violence quickly dissipated thereafter resulting in one arrests that day and no further prosecutions taking place until well after emancipation when African Americans started working openly side by side with whites throughout much older central business districts throughout America . Inkster was founded on July 1, 1837 by Nicholas Inkster and his wife Rachel. The town was named for Nicholas's father-in-law, Elisha Browning, who had settled in the area in 1824. In 1840, Inkster became a village. On December 12 of that year, the village's cornerstone was laid and the first public meeting was held. The first post office opened in October of 1845. By 1860, inkster had a population of 100 people. On November 30, 1870, Inkster was made a city by an act of the Michigan Legislature. On May 3 of that year, Mayor John Tilton announced plans to erect a new courthouse and library within the city limits; however due to financial difficulties the project never went ahead. Inkster experienced significant growth during its early years as a municipality; by 1880 it had reached its current size with a population of 350 people! However during World War I both the city and its citizens were forced to refuge in nearby Battle Creek while war raged outside their door. When hostilities ended in 1918 there were still over 700 residents living in Inkster but only 50% were employed in industry or commerce; this dropped to 25% by 1930 when manufacturing began taking off again thanks to union efforts throughout Michigan industrial regions After nearly fifty years as an unincorporated community located within Battle Creek Township (now Muskegon Heights), on January 1st 1954 Inkster changed hands from township trustees to City Council members with Mayor Wm Henson serving as chairperson until his retirement on June 30th 1984 - making him one of only two mayors ever elected recognize as such by their local government counterparts .
