Dixon had heard about a rich gold field discovered near Green Bay, Wisconsin, and decided to settle here in order to exploit it. Dixon's Landing became an important stop for travelers on the Great Lakes trade route because it offered easy access to both landlocked Michigan Territory andLake Superior which formed the heartland of North America north of Mexico City (Mexico). The town's location made it convenient for shipping goods between different parts of the continent as well as providing an anchorage for whaleboats during shipwrecks off its coast. In 1836, when Mackenzie River led through this area into Northwestern Ontario, Dixon renamedinkster "Mackenzie" after his local hero overlord John Ahern Mackenzie who had repelled Canadian forces at Battle of Lachine Rapids on July 25th 1835.(See: History Of Mackenzie River) In 1869, when oil began flowing out natural gas wells nearby in neighboring Thinwood Township (now Portage), residents established Inkster Oil Company with $10 donations from three men - David Dixon (founder; president & main stockholder), James Stillman (vice president), and J H Grosvenor (director). The company drilled six wells but only produced gas until 1925 when they switched to oil production due to growing demand caused by automobiles and other technological advances.(See: History Of The inkster Group) It has been reported that inksters are one of 5% or so US communities with German ancestry(See: Germans In Inkster) . This community growth can be traced back many years ago when members of two families pooled their resources together and started buying shares in another small business - Fidelity Grocery Co., which operated as a grocery store/bakery/delivery service.( See: Fidelity Grocery Co.) The first hotel in Inkster was built in 1851 by Captain Dickey as a stopover for travelers on their way from Battle Creek to Mackinac Island. By 1870, there were ten hotels and boarding houses in Inkster with a population of 1,500 people. In 1892, the first electric street light was installed in Inkster and by 1909 it had become an integral part of life in Inkster with over 20 businesses providing services including restaurants, bars, stores and gasoline stations. The great depression hit Inkster hard during World War II which saw many businesses closed or converted into government buildings such as the Post Office and School District Administration Building which are now museum features. After World War II ended, things began to turnaround for inksters with new development beginning to take hold including several shopping malls being developed around downtown and more automobiles becoming available for purchase Affordable housing became available throughout central Inkster while some former industrial sites were converted into luxury apartments overlooking downtown Today's economy is based largely on manufacturing with purposes such as printing media (printing newspapers, magazines), plastics (vinyl records) and electronic equipment among others having large plants located within walking distance of most residents here along with several universities within easy reach . Inkster has always been an important community thanks its diverse cultural attractions which include various museums/museums associated with local Native American tribes
