In 1824, the town was renamed to honor General Andrew Jackson who had fought against Native Americans in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. Inkster, Michigan is a small town located in the Eastern Michigan University District of Macomb County, Michigan. It is home to the Inkster Volunteer Fire Department and the Inkster High School. The population was 527 at the 2010 census. In addition to its volunteer fire department and high school, Inkster also has a library and two churches. The first settlers in what is now Inkster were farmers who arrived around 1825. They laid out a township on land that they acquired from the Ottawa River Indians. The first post office was established in 1828, and it served as an outpost for trader George Wilkinson until he moved his business to Detroit in 1835. The first store opened in 1839, and it was run by Elisha Gray until his death in 1840. The second settler in what is now Inkster was Isaac Dunham who arrived around 1830. He built a log cabin on the site of present-day State Road 961 which he named Dunhamsville after himself and his brother Noah Dunhams. By 1840, there were five settlers living in Dunhamsville: Isaac, Daniel French (later donated land for the college), John Smith ( later donated land for College Park), Elijah White (later renamed White Haven), and Nicholas Prentice ( later donated land for Indianola). In 1846, David Whitmore sold 640 acres of property near current-day I-75 south of Macomb Township to Hiram Mott for $2 per acre price paid with cash instead of goods or services required under state law at that time. This set off a decades-long controversy over whether Mott received payment or not because no deeds had been signedifying this sale as a sales transaction – meaning that Whitmore did not receive any tangible benefits from it other than access to future hunting grounds on Mott’s property which he would have automatically enjoyed if he had received payment for them under state law at that time. Inkster began receiving mail from Detroit beginning on November 12th, 1800 when Nathan Carden established Post #2 at what is now corner Main Street & Elm Street within one mile of where today’s State Road 961 meets US 41 northbound near modern day Clinton Township before becoming an A&P grocery Store & meat market known as John Finkle’s Grocery store starting about 1860 with 2 stores total across 2 blocks; store 1 open about 1863 & store 2 closed about 1870 due to tornado damage but reopened about 1880 by firemen/firefighters working @ local water tank; original post office building still standing east side next door @ old bakery ruins; 3rd largest grocery chain general merchandise store west of Chicago Opened 1904 selling groceries direct from large ice cream truck parked outside

Inkster is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. Inkster is part of the Muskegon Heights Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Inkster was Isaac Stephenson, who arrived in 1814 from New Hampshire and built a cabin on the current site of the village. In 1824, John Fenton bought land near present-day Inkster and founded the townsite of Fenton Township (later Inkster Township). A post office called "Fenton" was established in 1826, and stayed open until 1862. In 1868, Edwin Cranch opened a general store at what is now Main Street and 2nd Avenue in Inkster. The store became an important local center for trade and commerce until it closed its doors in 1922. Inkster's growth as a town began with its incorporation as a village on November 3, 1903 by charter from Michigan State Board of Education vowing to provide "a central place for social study and mutual obligation." On December 5, 1907, voters passed an act incorporating Inkster into both Washtenaw County (now Muskegon Heights) and Wayne County; this act created new municipal boundaries that continue to be used to this day. The first elected officials were Mayor Jno.[note 1] Wm.[note 2] Hargrave[note 3], councillor Dallen,[note 4], treasurer Jno.[note 5], justice William[note 6] Pomeroy,[note 7][notes 8][notes 9]

Inkster is home to Wayne State University and seven other colleges and universities. It was once one of the most important cities in East Michigan until it lost its status as a town after incorporation into the county in 1881. Inkster's history dates back to 1795 when French traders first set foot on what is now Ingham County. They called this area "Lac de la Presse" (Lake of Press). By 1824, Indian traders had established camps in what is now Inkster Township; these were known as "Mound Lake Trading Post". By 1830, Bassett & Company had built a gristmill on the Lac de la Presse River which served as their trading post for land dealings with Native Americans. The first settler to arrive in what is now Inkster Township was John Sothern who came overland from New York City on July 6, 1800. He named his new home "Inkster." From 1800-1851 there were only 2 settlers that arrived here – Mr. & Mrs Sothern – until they moved to Grand Rapids two years later and founded The Arkwright Manufacturing Company with their three sons Edward Arkwright (1805-1872), Levi Arkwright (1810-1890) and Samuel Arkwright (1813-1900). It wasn’t until 1881 when Ingham County was created that Inkster became its own town! This happened due to an act by the Michigan General Assembly which designated all of Gratiot Township east of US 131 as part of Ingham County while also creating Ingham County Circuit Court House located at 4 N Main St which seated 12 judges! It wasn’t until 1909 when Wayne State University began operations here! And even though it has been here since 1907 (!), we still give Wayne State University a “Welcome Home” plaque every year on our campus!
