The first school was built in 1847 and opened for students grades one through four. In 1870, a sawmill was built on the river and started manufacturing lumber. In 1877 an electric light plant was built and started operating in 1915. The Dutch Reformed Church was founded here in 1851. Holland, Michigan is a small town located in the lower Peninsula of Michigan. It was originally founded by Dutch settlers in 1795. The town became a part of the United States of America on July 20, 1811. Holland was named after Holland, England. As an agricultural center and population center, it played an important role in the development of Michigan. The town experienced some growth and decline during its history, but has since regained much of its former popularity as a community with strong cultural heritage and vibrancy. The current population of Holland is approximately 2,500 people. The early history of Holland can be traced back to 1795 when Dutch settlers arrived in what is now rural Holland Township on the Lower Peninsula of Michigania. They were followed by other groups over time until all but one group had left by 1811 when Congress passed the Act for Eastern Peninsular Territory which designated land eastward from Lake Superior as part of new United States territory. This act included land that would later become Holland Township including present-day eastern portions of Saginaw County and Mackinac County as well as northwest corner piece currently known as Muskegon Heights subdivision within today’scity limits (the western boundary being just south across Woodward Avenue from downtown). Although initially intended to support primarily French Catholics who had come overland through Quebec City, most colonists soon turned to agriculture due to favorable soil conditions and cheap labor available on American plantations west of the Appalachian Mountains at that time (a process known locally as “Dutchification”). By 1800 about 60% or so of total local population consisted Irish Catholics who worked their way up through political connections or trade with Puritan Americans; many coming directly from Ireland via Boston or New York City (ia Dublin) before making their way downriver to Detroit where they married native-born women and bought land near Saginaw Bayou/Muskegon River - becoming what we now call Algonquian Indians . After experiencing significant demographic changes due both positive events such as increasing immigration levels following War for Independence (1812), reaching parity with Native Americans through treaties signed at Traverse City in 1837 – culminating with purchase by Ulysses S Grant totaling 1 million acres - Catholic Indian removal began under President James Kossuth's Administration resulting in more than 250 families head out on flatboats each week beginning December 5th 1847 finally arriving at Ionia Landing promontory on Grand Ledge peninsula off Cadillac Peninsula exactly two years after Mackinac Island Incident leading up ultimately to conversion en masse into Protestant Episcopalians led by Archbishop John Surtees... subsequently establishing mission stations along migration route... settling approximated 4200 miles NW & WSW Dearborn MI & Kalamazoo MI among others In less than 10 years following first contact nearly all present Algonquin Tribes living within 500 miles east & west side US states excepting Ontario excluding only Huron Tribe living 400 miles north&southwest side US states remaining until 1840s When final treaty negotiated between US & Canada resulted in extinguishment all tribal rights remaining unceded... mestizo children born here prior to 1830 also considered indigenous under US law In short: Following initial contact with Europeans numerous tribes lived throughout these regions including Mohawk Nation located 100 miles SWNE St Ignace MI; Oneida Nation located 140 miles NE Lansing MI; Onondaga Nation located 350+ miles NWNW Toronto ON; Potawatomi Tribe resided 100+ miles SE Ottawa ON; Ojibwe Tribe resided 450+mile NNW Winnipeg MB
