Holland, Michigan is a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Munich-Ionia Metropolitan Statistical Area. Holland was founded in 1834 by Peter and Hendrick Hesselink as a log cabin community on the east side of Big Lake. In 1857, it became a station on the new Pere Marquette Railroad. Holland experienced growth from its initial population of about 40 in 1858 to over 1,000 by 1880. The post office was established in 1892 and closed in 1957; however, the name "Holland" remains as an official identifier for the community today. The Holland School District serves Holland and portions of Ionia County through eight schools: Bartlett (K-5), Big Lake (6-12), Clearwater (13-18), Deer Park (19-24), Elmira Heights (25-29), Friendsville (30-35), Grand Haven Township (36-40) and Holliswood (41+) which serve students from prekindergarten through 12th grade with plans to open a high school opening in 2019A single campuses serving adults only is being planned for 2020A primary physical education/sports program has been proposed for K9s and first graders using state funded equipment In addition to its core educational institutions, Holland also offers numerous recreational opportunities including two golf courses; three tennis courts; four baseball diamonds; five football fields; one ice rink; one water park; and more than 20 miles of hiking trails accessible from its streets and public parks.

Holland, Michigan was founded in 1835 by Hollandites. The community is located on the Ottawa River and is part of the Grand Rapids metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Holland was John Purdy, who arrived in 1834. He had come from Boston with his family. In 1836, another pioneer, Jacob Grosse, moved from Detroit to start a farm at present day milepost 249 on US 31 near Zionsville. Grosse's descendants still live there and are known as the Grosse brothers. In 1837, Dutchman Hendrick Oosterhof settled in what would become Holland Township. He had come to America from Rotterdam with his wife and three children. Oosterhof was one of the early pioneers of Michigan and he is credited with being the first European to set foot in what became Holland Township. His farmstead stands today on Nicholas Road just east of I-94 exit 22A (Milepost 248). The next wave of immigrants arrived in 1840 when German immigrant Johann Friedrich Kapp opened a restaurant called 'Das Haus am Ufer' (House bythewater) in rural section 10 east ofpresent day Homer City limits on US 12/Milepost 246 (now Joe Louis Drive). Kapp's descendants still live there and are known as 'The Kappes'. On February 28, 1847, a group of families led by William Caldwells began building 'Caldwell's Store', which would become one of the most important stores in town for many years. It operated out of a large brick building that still stands today on Main Street just south of I-94 exit 22A (today's Milepost 248). A second store followed soon after at present day corner lot 5 acres north of Milepost 248 between Josephine Road and West Side Highway NE . It wasn't until 1850 when an exchange station was built at present day intersectionof Mound Road NW & Central Avenue NW . This allowed travelers going north or south along Mound Rd NW & Central Ave NW to buy goods brought downriver by steamboats or wagons during this era
