Holland, Michigan is a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is located on the east side of the Straits of Mackinac, about 20 miles north of Flint and 30 miles southeast of Lansing. The population was 1,987 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit Holland were French traders in 1610. They named it "Holland" after their homeland, France. The British also visited Holland in 1610 and called it "Holland." When Dutch settlers moved into what is now Holland in 1796, they changed the name to "Michigan." In 1834, an act was passed by Congress that declared all land within ten miles of the straits to be considered part of Michigan. This included Holland Township. In 1836, a post office was established at Holland with John Prentice as its first supervisor. In 1840, another post office was established at Lansing with Isaac Watts as its first supervisor. In 1851, a railroad line was built through Holland from Ilion to Grand Rapids; this made it possible for people living in other parts of Michigan to work in Holland without leaving their homes. In 1865, a Masonic Temple andodge were constructed in Dutch Reformed religion in what is now downtown Amsterdam; this made it possible for people who did not have religious affiliation to worship together without fear that they would be persecuted by their fellow church members back home. In 1868, when Holland Township became agricultural territory (it had been part of Washtenaw County since 1800), Peter Davenport started planting corn and soybeans on his farm south-west of town; he used some birds he had caught while hunting on his property for food into farming purposes rather than selling them as pets or meat specimens like many others around then did. By 1896 there were over 100 farmers operating rural roadsides throughout township; these families produced hay, oats and other crops for local markets as well as providing services such as laundry and grocery delivery service to residents across township boundaries (over time this service evolved into today's municipal water system). On January 1st, 1907 it merged with Clinton Township to form Clintonville Township which later merged with Sandusky City proper on December 15th 1991 creating Sandusky–Clinton Township (now Defiance) County government district
