Holland, Michigan is a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 9,755 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kalamazoo-Port Huron-Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1837 by Dutch settlers who named it Holland after the capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam. The name change to Lansing in 1872 when Lansing became the capital of Michigan Territory. The population of Holland increased steadily from its original population of just over 100 in 1837 to more than 2,000 by 1860 and 4,000 by 1880. By 1900, there were more than 10,000 people living in Hollandtown and Holland Township. In 1906, Hollandtown was incorporated as a village and then again as a town in 1959; it reverted to being an unincorporated community again on November 6th, 2002. Holland was one of two communities that voted to secede from Michigan during the civil war (the other being Grand Rapids). On October 15th, 1862 they adopted a resolution stating "We do hereby declare our desire to secede from this state and form another government under our own Constitution." They did not receive any help from the state government and eventually lost their township status which made them much less powerful politically within the state government. However their economic power continued until about 1930 when Chrysler moved into Lansing for production purposes making much kiton necessary for their manufacturing process which destroyed many homes along with all but one percent of downtown’s businesses between 1931-1946 due largely to wartime shortages caused by World War II aluminum production at nearby Rockford Arsenal near Detroit
