Bullets in Holland, Michigan date back to the 1860s. The first bullets were created in Holland by James Hennepin, a blacksmith. Bullet manufacturing began in 1871 and continued until the early 1900s. Gunsmiths made all types of bullet including military ammunition, hunting ammo, target ammo, and sporting ammo. In 1892, Holland became the first city in Michigan to have a public health bureau. Bullet production stopped around 1910 because of World War I and the Great Depression. In 1932, Holland passed an ordinance banning handguns except for police officers and those carrying permits. In 1957, a new ordinance allowed handgun sales to private citizens with a $100 application fee and fingerprinting as required. The ordinance was repealed in 1978 due to gun violence. Holland is a small town in the Macomb County, Michigan area. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It has been inhabited since 1835. A post office called Holland was established in 1847, and remained in operation until 1957. In that year, the community became a village. The first settler in what is now Holland was John Purdy who arrived on July 3, 1835 from Baltimore, Maryland. He named his land home "Holland" after his birthplace of Holland, England. The original village had a total population of 10 people and was located on the east side of Mackinac Island between the Huron River and Kipps Harbor Creek. In 1857, Holland became part of Bloomfield Township when it was created from parts of four other townships: Holland (created 1850), Grand Rapids (1851), Sterling Heights (1854), and Oakland (1857). At that time there were only 4 settlers living in Holland Village proper - John Purdy, his wife Esther Ritchie (née Boyle), their children John Fenton Purdy Jr., Esther Ritchie Fenton IV., Nellie Belle Purdy-Bennett and her brother John Fenton Purdy Sr.. On December 14th 1860 while all residents were gathered together to celebrate New Year's Day with an openair dinner at local tavern The Lion's Head Inn on Mackinac Island some unusual activity happened which remains unexplained to this day; strange lights were seen moving across the sky from west to east for several minutes before suddenly disappearing behind trees or buildings on shoreline near where present day Hudson Street meets Hudson Bayou; subsequently no further reports were received about this sighting until November 11th 1861 when three farmers travelling by stagecoach reported seeing “a bright light” over water just south of Onondaga Lake about 12 miles southwest of Lansingburgh Ferry Landing; subsequent investigation revealed that object was not a natural phenomenon but rather an American made steamboat which had sunk during a severe storm off shore near shore early that morning
The Holland area was first settled in the late 18th century by German immigrants. The area became a part of the United States following the Mexican-American War. In 1959, the town of Holland was created from a portion of Macomb Township.
