Highland Park is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the shores of Lake Huron. The population was 10,567 at the 2010 census. Highland Park is one of the most diverse cities in Michigan and has a rich history that can be found throughout its cityscape. The first residents of what is now Highland Park were Native American people who lived near Sault Ste Marie before migrating east to what is now Ontario County in 1796. In 1836, local landowner James McNaughton donated 1,500 acres (4 km2) to establish what would become Highland Park. The first post office was established in 1837 and was called McNaughtown after General James McNaughton, the founder of Detroit. Some of the earliest businesses in Highland Park were lumberyards and shipyards which helped contribute to its rapid growth during the early 1800s. By 1830, there were over sixty businesses operating within driving distance of downtown for workers and customers alike. One of Highland Park's most famous natives was Alexander Graham Bell who founded Bell Telephone Company here in 1876 as part of his experiments with telecommunications research. It wasn't until 1899 that telephone service became available throughout downtown as well as other parts of town including Northridge and Midtown Heights along with much larger communities such as Flint or Warrensburg across I-75 southward into Oakland County. In 1905, Automobile Manufacturing Corporation moved from their previous location on Woodward Avenue to a new factory complex on Mackinac Island overlooking Lower Michigan Sound that would continue producing Model A automobiles until 1957 when it closed down due to competition from Japanese automakers Hiroshima Motors Corporation and Toyota Industries Inc.. In addition to manufacturing activities at Mackinac Island, Automobile Manufacturing Corporation also developed an experimental car chassis known as "The White Heiress" which served as inspiration for Ford's Shelby GT350 model years later!
