Highland Park, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Wayne County. Highland Park is located on the southern border of Detroit and is bordered to the north by Midtown Detroit and to the east by Grand Rapids, MI. The first settler in what would become Highland Park was John Haggerty who arrived in 1824 from Ireland. He named his land "Haggerty's Landing". In 1827, Alexander McGregor purchased 5 acres (20,000 m²) at present-day corner of Gratiot and Woodward Streets from Haggerty for $425 dollars cash. This purchase set off a series of land sales within Wayne County that would create most of today's Highland Park area including: portions of Farmington Hills, Dearborn Heights, Midtown Detroit, Corktown/Eastpointe, Saint Clair Shores/Winchester Township and Auburn Hills. In 1829 or 1830 David Sibley founded what became Sibley's grocery store on Gratiot Street which still stands today as a well-known landmark in Highland Park. It was here that pioneer settlers Christopher Prentice and Isaac Allbright met and formed their first mutual acquaintance which would result in business relationships between them for years to come.
