Highland Park, Michigan is a small village in the county of Oakland in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. Highland Park is located on the west bank of the San Joaquin River just north of downtown Oakland and east of State Route 8 between Haggerty and Lafayette Lakes. The Village had its start in 1867 as a result of efforts by William Seward, governor of Michigan and headwaters settler, to create a town on his Rancho de las Pulgas near Auburn Hills. In 1868, Highland Park was organized as a village within Oakland County under the name "Albany". In 1876, John Darnall donated land for what would become Highland Park's first school; it opened in 1877 with 12 students. The first post office was established at Highland Park in 1889. In 1901, when Highland Park amalgamated with nearby Lafayette Township to form new Oakland Township (later renamed Livingston), it continued to use Albany as its legal name until 1936 when it reverted back to its original spelling. The population reached 2,083 by 1910; however, during World War I there were mass deportations from America due to WWI related hysteria and an increased demand for food soldiers returned home without having lost any teeth or other body parts which might have been seized by enemy forces as trophies - such behavior caused many families residing near MacArthur Boulevard/Oakland-Haggerty Lake Drive to leave their homes during that period also known as "the move." With few means available for them to live elsewhere other than often living off government assistance or selling their homes after the war ended they gradually vacated their rural areas throughout much of Northern California taking with them any cultural artifacts they may have brought with them including examples from Highland Park which remain some of most significant heritage remaining from pre-WWII American culture in that area today

However, Highland Park continued to grow economically despite these difficulties. In 1907, the post office was moved from Detroit to Highland Park and it remained here until it relocated to Ypsilanti in 1963. Highland Park experienced some major growth during World War II as many residents joined the military or served in wartime industries such as munitions plants or aircraft manufacturing. Many veterans returned home after the war and started new businesses in Highland Park including restaurants, schools, mechanics shops, dentists' offices and more. After the war ended, many families left Highland Park for suburban neighborhoods but few new businesses developed in place of those that had been abandoned during the war years. However, through hard work by local entrepreneurs and support from government agencies like the Michigan Community Development Authority (MCDA), Highlands park has seen resurgence over recent decades thanks to its rich history and vibrant culture which has made it one of Michigan's most popular tourist destinations both domestically AND abroad!
