In 1907 when Detroit's central business district expanded eastward into what is now downtown Oakland County, businesses within walking distance of Gratiot Avenue began moving out of their original locations into new buildings on or near Woodward Avenue such as Foxcroft Mansion (now known as Renaissance Center), Bellefontaine Manor (now known as Eastern Market Place), Cadillac Place (now known as Cadillac Place-East), Cass Corridor (now known as McNichols Corridor), Donwood Drive (now known as Donwood Parkway) and others which soon became know collectively as "The Square". It wasn't until 1912 when streetcars started running through Highland Park that residents could begin enjoying all that had formerly been available only from downtownDetroit or by car or bike ride. In 1915 Newsome & Day opened up one of the few remaining grocery stores in downtownOakland County with a 14-car garage on Woodward Avenue along with three other stores which later became the Village Shopping Center; this location would remain operational until 1984 when it closed due to suburban growth proximate by then Interstate 495 between Detroit and Royal Oak Township. This growth led also to increased traffic congestion on Gratiot Avenue which was exacerbated by inadequate streetscaping including an overpass connecting Gratiot Ave with Woodward Ave which caused backups every time it rained; Glen Oaks Boulevard was also added during this time but did not help alleviate traffic conditions on Gratiot Ave., leading eventually to developer David Geffen purchasing Newsome & Day's assets in 1981 for $5 million dollars making him one of America's most influential private developers at that time

In 1928, a group led by Jethro Gibbs bought 1/4 mile (0.6 km) east of where Midland now stands and renamed it "Highland Park." In 1940, when parts were transferred from Holland Township to Highland Park from White Lake Township, then part of Jackson Township, Highlands became an official city with its own charter dated 2 November 1940 The first mayor was Winton Downing who served two terms beginning with 1 May 1941 until his death on 15 October 1944 due to pneumonia which he had contracted while vacationing in Europe during World War II while serving as assistant secretary at Defense Research Board under Franklin D.
