There are no exact records of how firearms were introduced to Highland Park, Michigan, but it is safe to say that they were at some point used for target shooting. Highland Park is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Highland County. The population was 9,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Highland Park were French colonists who arrived in 1796 and named it after the hilly region near Paris where they had been living before migrating to Michigan. In 1814, when Cadillac was founded by Nicholas Lemoine and other Frenchmen on land that would become Highland Park, Cadillac was one of three townships (the others being Montrose and Oakland) within Shiawassee Township. In 1836, when Shiawassee Township was organized into a separate district, Cadillac became part of that district as well as Macomb Township (now Muskegon Heights). In 1868, when Macomb Township split off from Shiawassee Township, Highland Park became an independent municipality with its own government and courts. On February 14, 1870, it adopted a charter which granted it full municipal status with a Mayor-Council form of government similar to that used now in neighboring Detroit. On December 5th of that year there were widespread celebrations throughout the city when John Prentice became mayor after winning a close race against incumbent David Sievers. Prentice served two terms as mayor before retiring in 1884 due to health problems; he was succeeded by his son Harry Prentice Jr.. In 1895 Harry Prentice Sr., died suddenly at age 46 while still serving as Mayor; his son followed him into politics soon afterward becoming Mayor himself in 1907 at age 48. During World War I Highland Park contributed 4 neutrals to serve in the military (one man per month) out of 10 residents; during Prohibition years 1919-1924 only 2 men volunteered for service but this total includes both City Men who furnished weapons & equipment (& $2500), not just Citizens (& no tax exemption) & all volunteers must have completed 6 months enlistment or paid $2/month fee After World War I ended many people left for better opportunities including some young families looking for stability & opportunity following years of hard work during war time shortages caused by prohibition Tapiola Avenue between Whitehall Rd & Macklin Rd then known as "The Race Course" became known locally as "Highlands Way." Many new homes were built during these years such as: First National Bank building on current site next to Genesee High School which opened Sept 1922 (it burned down in 1957); Masonic Lodge #1 on current site open Dec 1921 (it also burned down); First Presbyterian Church built Feb 1923(still standing today); Stonington Hall closed Dec 1924 because too expensive (& too much hassle for parking permits etc.) but reopened Oct 1925 under different name - Stonington Manor; homeBuilt on present site next to Genesee High School which opened Sept 1922Another important development took place around this time when Dr JB Wittman bought land east side of Macklin Rd from former Gov Wirt Adams resulting in construction beginning immediately adjacent to modern day Academy Road across from Whitehall Rd which later became University Place
