Highland Park is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, on the border of Oakland and Macomb counties. The population was 12,362 at the 2010 census. Highland Park is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. Potential settlers in what is now Highland Park included early pioneers Capt Ayer and his family, who came across the Rouge River in 1824; John McNaught, who platted what is now Highland Park in 1829; David Stevenson, who patented land east of present-day Clinton Street in 1830; and Major General Thomas Haggerty (1798-1867), commander of American forces during the War Of 1812. In 1835, Haggerty donated land to create Cass Technical High School which still stands today as one of Michigan's most famous institutions. The first post office was established at Highland Park on October 14, 1840 by James Witherspoon from Detroit with himself as postmaster. It was moved to its current location at Clinton Avenue and Woodward Street on July 1, 1845. The first store built in what is now Highland Park was built by Elisha Lewis and Isabella Lewis in an area that would later become Cass Township on December 4, 1840s as part of a general store chain begun by their father Eli & Isabella Lewis (1789-1865). A cotton gin operated by Elijah Fenton opened near present day Lafayette Boulevard and Belle Isle Avenue between 1850 and 1860; this mill continued until it burned down on May 20th 1865 while being used for processing Confederate currency captured during The Civil War efforts to purchase food for troops stationed withindetroit ().
