Highland Park is located on the Ottawa River just east of Detroit and north of Windsor. The river forms part of Highland Park's border with neighboring Midland Township to the south and east, as well as with Dearborn Heights to the northwest. The first settler in what is now Highland Park was Drury Cottage, built by James Dickey around 1800 AD. A post office called Highland Park was established in 1826, and remained operational until 1892. In 1836, John Saginaw built a ferryboat landing on present-day Second Street near where he lived for several years before starting his own business exporting cornmeal from his land near Shiawassee Lake. In 1840, Nicholas Halstead moved to what is now Highland Park from Holland Township and began raising chickens on his property which became known as Halstead’s Valley orchard (). In 1851–1852, surveyors laid out much of present-day Highland Park on a grid system based upon their original surveys of Detroit area land which facilitated easy annexation by other municipalities over time. By 1860, some 400 homes had been erected in what became known as "The Highlands". That year saw also its first school opening when Lansingburgh Academy accepted students from Ottawa County under arrangements made between that county's board of education and localanti-slavery group Sojourner Truth (). In 1865, Scottish immigrant Allan MacLaren purchased 1/4 mile (0.8 km) west of current Third Street from Elijah Whitehurst for $1 per acre (0.24 kg/ha). MacLaren set up a farm that produced apples (), barley () and hay (). He named it "Alan's Farm" after himself andBaseding its name off an ancient Gaelic word meaning 'broad open space'), later shortened to simply "MacLaren's." A post office called Albion was established at this site in 1866; it closed effective November 14th 1870 due to no new mail being received during that month period statewide due to abolitionist campaigns against slavery underway throughout America . Albion reopened on December 2nd 1870 under new regulations put into effect by Congress following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation . Albion served again until January 20th 1893 when it closed again due to lack of mail volume brought about by railroad construction across metropolitan Detroit . It reopened on February 3rd 1893 but continued serving only through October 15th 1893 when it finallyclosed because railroads were building along Third Street within sight but without ever delivering mail thereto .....It would be another 10 yearsuntil another post office opened at this location (which would become Oneida).. ...Postmasters General John Logan (January 16 th 1889 – May 25 th 1890), Horace Greeley (July 14 th 1895 – March 4 th 1896), Alfred Vail (May 27 th 1897 – October 6 t 1898), Salmon P Chase (November 7 th 1899 – May 5TH 1900), Austin Stuckey(October 20TH 1901 - January 22ND 1902), Charles Evans Hughes(March 8TH 1903 - July 20Th 1904) .... Highland Park is a town in the Midwestern United States. The population was 2,883 at the 2010 census. Highland Park is one of two towns in Muskegon County, Michigan, and is located on the southern border of Muskegon Heights. The first European settlers in what is now Highland Park were French traders who founded the village of La Salle in 1795. In 1814, during the War of 1812, General James K. Polk's army passed through central Michigan and encountered American Indian forces marching from Battle Creek to attack Detroit. A skirmish resulted in the surrender of about 100 Shawnee warriors at Highland Park's Green Gables cottage; this event became known as "the Green Gables Massacre". In 1828, when Muskegon Heights was established as a township by act of the Michigan Legislature, it included parts of present-day Highland Park. In 1830, John Sibley settled near what is now Oneonta Road and built a cabin on a bluff overlooking Muskegon River Valley. By 1840, Sibley had developed several other villages along the river including Clintonville and Gratiot Hills withinMuskegon Heights Township boundaries (now part of Van Buren Township). In 1847, when Kalamazoo County was created from Allegany County (which included most of Upper Peninsula), Highland Park became part of that county. The first post office opened in Highland Park on October 27th, 1848; it remained open until its closure on December 1st 1886 because mail delivery service was discontinued due to currency shortages caused by American Civil War efforts to maintain parity with Spain across their shared border. On May 3rd 1870 , Fenton Masons Lodge #522 met at Red Brick House on Dearborn Street for an informal meeting to discuss starting a Masonic lodge there as well as future activities for their branch within Muskegon Heights Township limits which surrounded them then also encompassing rural areas eastward into Farmington Hills . On July 12th 1870 they held their first meeting inside 35 White Oak Lane where they operated under Grand Lodge jurisdiction until transferred to Grand Lodge No 753 November 6th 1893 . The Old Order Masons Post Office Building still stands today just off I-75 exit 351 southbound near milepost 231
The first settlers in Highland Park were John and Susanna Nicholson, who arrived in 1795. The area was part of the base for the U.S. Military during the Revolutionary War and was known as "Fighting Fort Dearborn." In 1812, a group of Methodist missionaries founded a church in the area and named it Highland Park after its location on a high bluff overlooking Dearborn Heights. In 1836, Michigan statehood was granted to Michigan and Highland Park became part of what is now Oakland County. In 1847, the first post office in Highland Park opened with five mailbags per week delivered by horseback to residents. By 1860, there were 20 residents and nine mailbags per week bringing mail service to everyone within one mile of Highland Park. In 1872, local citizens voted to annex their portion of Township of Detroit which included Highland Park. This gave rise to what is today's downtown area around Grand Boulevard and Washington Street while also expanding housing opportunities throughout rural areas east of Woodward Avenue into present-day Bloomfield Township (which merged with Oakland County in 1959). In 1925, voters approved an act that provided funds for street improvements along Grand Boulevard from Wayne to Troy Streets as well as for new schools constructed at Saginaw Valley State University (now Midland State University) on White Road north of Palmer Road. In 1940, when war began between Japan and America, many people fled Japan because of the bombings there over Hiroshima . A few hundred people moved into homes near I-75/M-10 junction where they were later called "Hometowns". They built various businesses such as flower shops, convenience stores etc., until they all left when fuel prices went up in 1973-1974 causing oil refineries outside Detroit not to operate due to increased costs associated with importing crude oil from Saudi Arabia . Many these hometowns are still preserved today through organizations such as AARP MI or Battle Creek Heritage Museum
