One of the earliest businesses in Highland Park was a shoe store run by John Walsh. In 1836, John's son-in-law Paddy Fitzpatrick opened a grocery store on West Main Street which became America's first multi-story grocery store. A few years later, Fitzpatrick's son Maurice opened his own general store on Grand River Avenue which remain open today as Maurice Fitzpatrick Fine Jewellery Store. Many early enterprises in Highland Park were based on trade: wagon workshops operated by Peter Hennessey; blacksmith shops operated by Daniel McIntyre and Nicholas Cronin; Odd Fellows lodges met at McKnight Tavern for Masonic activities; and a post office was established in 1838 with Wm Dickey as its first mail carrier. In 1846, David Stone moved to Highland Park from Wyandotte Heights (nowDearborn Heights), Michigan with his family and founded Stone & Sons Grain Elevator Company that remains an important business district today within the town limits of Highland Park proper along East Main Street between Griswold Road and First National Bank Drive/Route 910 (now Woodward Avenue). The company grew rapidly throughout the midwest until it went bankrupt during the Great Depression due to increased competition from other grain elevator companies across the nation. David Stone never recovered from bankruptcy and died penniless several years later at age 76 after leaving his entire estate to his wife Rebecca stone and their two daughters Nancie (Nancy) Stone Fordham and Alice (Alison) Fordham Gardiner – all three women had married him while he still held title to his mill equipment patents issued under their father's name when he lost those assets during bankruptcy proceedings some 25 years earlieron April 14th 1912 – just one week shy of his 78th birthday! It should be noted that RebeccaStoneFordhamGardiner did not reside permanently within any particular community or township boundaries for long after her father’s death but rather she spread her wings somewhat geographically such that she resided within Dearborn Township adjacent to her half-brother Tunica Fordham so that they could maintain contact through email correspondence even though they did not share common genetic heritage! Today almost every significant business center within easy walking distance of each other exists either as a result of annexation by neighboring townships or because it has been acquired by another large corporation - this being especially true with respect to educational institutions where larger buildings have replaced smaller schools over time constituting what used to be called “the village” although these days many small businesses operate inside larger stores located close together rather than having separate storefronts therefore becoming known more generally as “highlands park” although this term may no longer accurately reflect both social history nor contemporary reality since many residents now work downtown anyway!! This situation is quite similaralbeit less pronounced outside central business districts where large corporate headquarters are situated !! It should also be noted that downtown Dearborn provides ample parking for all sorts of commercial vehicles including tractor trailers !! Highland Park was a small town in the Kalamazoo area of Michigan, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2000 census. Highland Park is now part of the city of Kalamazoo. The first European settlers in what is now Highland Park were French Huguenots who arrived in 1796. They named their community after a high mountain peak in Scotland, "Queen's Peak". In 1824, the first post office was established and by 1830, there were two stores and 10 residents. The Panic of 1837 forced many people to leave for lack of money. A school was built in 1838 but it closed due to financial problems in 1840. In 1851, a sawmill and gristmill were built; these mills continued to operate until 1959 when they were combined into one mill which still operates today as Highland Park Mills Inc.. In 1861, an act known as the Michigan Municipal Act allowed Kalamazoo to annex land east of State Road 49 between Eagle Lake and Howell Creek (now Gratiot Avenue). This annexation created Highland Park Township which had a population of 3992 residents on January 1, 1863. On November 15th that year, Govt. John Prentice signed an act creating Oakland County with its own government including Highland Park Township without any reference to Highland Park or any other municipality therein- this law became effective on December 1st 1863! It should be noted that there never really was anything 'highland' about this township other than its name – it consisted mostly of rolling farmland with some homes along Gratiot Avenue and Eagle Lake Boulevard/State Road 49.) On October 25th 1899 local resident James Maynard organized a group called 'The Citizens League for Better Government' with the goal of restoring government services such as road paving and bridges which had been lost during prohibition eradn . After years of research and fundraising effortsMaynard's group managed to secure $5000 from several sources including insurance companies and rich businessmen frustrated over Prohibition – this sum became known as 'The Maynard Fund'. With this newfound powerMaynard quickly beganFIXING UP THE PUBLIC ROADS OF HIGHLAND PARK- something that hadn't been done since before prohibition! He also started building new public buildings like a library (opened in 1905), fire station (opened 1918), jail (opened 1919)…the list goes on and on! And we haven't even gotten started on MAYNARD'S SCHOOL - which he completely rebuilt from scratch...It's hard not to love him for it! During World War II most residents decided against returning home because they thought war would bring more taxes than they could afford; however many did return once hostilities ended. Many businesses opened up again once war ended while others stayed closed because they didn't have enough customers coming back afterwards. In 1981-1982 Highland Park Elementary School reopened after being closed for many years due to arson attempts targeting its property renewal costs alone took over $100k dollars!!! Needless to say things have changed quite a bit since then 🙂
In 1814, the area that would become Highland Park was part of the towns of Lapeer and Bay City. The first settler in what is now Highland Park, George Stephenson, came to the area in 1795. In 1800, a post office was established at what is now Highland Park. In 1814, when the town of Lapeer was organized by a group of landowning families led by John D. Rockefeller, they donated 4 acres (1 km2) of their land south of McLean Road to be used as a village square. The square eventually became home to several stores and other businesses before becoming an agricultural center with rolling hills as its backdrop. The first school in Highland Park was built on East Michigan Avenue in 1835. In 1840, the town had only 10 residents and two schools; however, it grew rapidly thanks to new transportation options such as steamboats and wagons which made traveling to nearby villages easier. By 1850, there were over 100 residents in Highlander Park and two schools; but again growth slowed due to factors such as railroad construction which disrupted travel connections and trade opportunities throughout the region. However, growth resumed afterHenry Ford founded his automaker in Dearborn Heights in 1903 which helped give Highland Park its current name and presence within Dearborn County’s larger metropolitan area
