In 1869, John Walsh purchased 1/4 acre (0.16 km²) on one side of US Highway 11 south of present day McMartin Road for $5 from Joseph Haines and erected a house thereon which served as the nucleus for many later businesses and residences in Highland Park including: The Walsh Hotel; Haines Drug Store; The Ford Motor Company's Plant #1 (Ford Field); United Press Club; First National Bank Building; School District No. 107 Building which still stands today adjacent to Stroud Farms Shopping Center; First Presbyterian Church; Masonic Lodge #3 & #4 built in 1895 by C P Mullen while working with J S Dunn as an architect and builder on new buildings for that lodge alone at that time ; Assembling Place (now called "The Gable" building), used as a garage until 1954 when it was moved to its current location within United Way Headquarters off Woodward Avenue next to Iveco Trucks Dept.; Old Holland Schoolhouse which still stands today along with 2 other schoolhouses built between 1870-1872 by Elisha Beall near where Eisenhower Boulevard now meets MLK Drive NE corner Republic Boulevard eastside industrial park just eastof present day Joe's Pizza restaurant formerly known as "Hollywood Casino" - all these structures remain standing today except for Joe's Pizza restaurant which has been demolished . In 1932, Edward Mapplethorpe photographed 24 individual homes in what are now Highland Park using negative film developed at his Appleton photography studios before returning home to England overnight on October 15th following a number two fire started by his assistant during filming on September 6th outside Michigan State University Normal School campus in East Lansing

Highland Park was founded in 1858 by Scotsmen who were moving to the area from the nearby town of Saginaw. The original home of Highland Park was a small log cabin on the edge of what is now known as the park. In 1870, construction began on what is now known as Highland Park's first schoolhouse. The school served students until 1916 when it was replaced by a new school building that still stands today. In 1886, Highland Park got its first post office which served residents until 1957. In 1904, Highland Park became part of Detroit so there was no longer a need for a post office here. However, in 1907-08, another small post office functioned at Highland Park before being moved to Southfield in 1958. In 1911, the first golf course was opened in Highland Park with twelve courses playable including six professional courses and two amateur courses. By 1928 there were over fifty golf courses within walking distance of downtown Detroit! In 1932-33, some developers formed the "Dallas Group" which planned to develop much larger parcels of land than what would ultimately be developed in downtown Detroit into an upscale residential community called Dallas Heights. However due to funding difficulties and World War II veteran shortages many parts of Dallas Heights never materialized and remain derelict today while other portions have been renovated and are used as housing or commercial properties. In 1951-52, when Woodward Avenue connecting Downtown Detroit with Midtown Detroit opened up new business opportunities for everyone along this stretch making shopping centers possible directly east of Woodward near Eastern Market become available for development instead being Focus Gardens which remains open today as one major strip mall across from University Place Mall where Ford Field once stood but has been converted into officesITE since 2006 while also hosting several restaurants (including Red Lobster) as well as a large number Of retail stores all facing onto Woodward Avenue creating significanteyesores along one side only accessible via underground tunnels!
