Highland Park is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the southern tip of the Upper Peninsula. The population was 9,827 at the 2000 census. Highland Park is one of four townships in Muskegon County and is part of the Muskegon Heights, MI Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to Highland Park were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1798. They built a log cabin on what is now State Road 12 south of town and named it "Henderson". Henderson remained an agricultural community until 1854 when John Fritsch built a sawmill on Little Miami River just east of town and started shipping logs from his mill to Holland for furniture making and other purposes. The first post office in Highland Park was established in 1855, but it closed several years later because noone wanted to deliver mail there due to fear of being robbed or spied upon by rival lumberjacks. In 1861, Daniel Czarnecki bought land northeast of town from John Fritsch for $150 and began developing it into a township; he named it Highland Park after himself and his father-in-law clan's original farmstead near Detroit (now part ofmuskegon Heights). In 1867, he organized a township board with five members; this was followed by election as township chairman by vote May 15th, 1870 among those same five officials. On December 5th, 1870, Highland Park became an independent municipality with its own police force under the jurisdiction of Muskegon Heights Township Police Department; however, voting continued within Highlander park until 1903 when all municipalities within Muskegon Heights were consolidated into one entity under that department's umbrella - becoming Muskegon Heights Municipal Corporation effective January 1st 1904 without any participation by residents within HighlandsPark itself! In 1902-1903 following annexation intoMuskegon HeightsMunicipality certain improvements were made to Main Street & Boardwalk which runs through downtown today including new sidewalks & streetlights as well as installationof water mains underground replacing an earlier system that relied upon surface flooding during heavy rains! These renovations included completing paving & resurfacing both streetscapes which had been poorly maintained since their construction over 50 years prior! During prohibition era many businesses closed down due to lack of customers or moral turpitude although some did manage to keep open such as Mr Troup’s grocery store which still stands today across from High school! During World War II many homes were requisitioned by military authorities for use as barracks & garrison/prisoner housing while others functioned as stores & restaurants providing support services essential for war effort such as gas production etc.; finally following Victory Over Japan these properties reverted back into civilian hands enjoying limited commercial activity up until recent times when they have seen significant renovation efforts resulting in their current appearance! Highland Park was founded in 1847 by George and Martha (Hancock) McNaught. It was named for the highlands to the east of it, which were rich in metals and minerals. The McNaughts were Scottish immigrants who came to Michigan in 1819. In 1847, they established a farm on what is now Highland Park Road. The McNaughts were very active in their community, playing an important role in its development. They also donated land for schools and churches. By 1870, Highland Park had a population of about 100 people. In 1862, the McNaught family sold their land to Alexander Deacon and his heirs. Deacon built many homes in Highland Park, including one known as "The White House." He also served as mayor of Highland Park from 1865 to 1870.
