Highland Park is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 5,627 at the 2010 census. Highland Park is a community on the east side of I-94, south of Detroit and north of Lansing. It is also bordered by Washtenaw County to the northwest, Clinton County to the northeast, and Oakland County to the southeast. The town was first settled in 1836 by Scots-Irish immigrants who had come overland from what is now Ireland. The name "Highland" comes from two high points in nearby Hillsdale Township: Highland Heights and Highland Park Golf Course which sit on top of hills that were part of an earlier land grant to William Palmer around 1800. The first post office was established in 1837, and named for Colonel David Heriot (1792-1864), a British officer who served in North America during the War of 1812 as lieutenant colonel under General Anthony Wayne. In 1840, Highland Park developed as a general store and services center on Wabash Avenue between Woodward Avenue and Gratiot Avenue; it became known as "the heart of Detroit." A school was built there in 1846 followed by an hospital in 1861 before becoming an agricultural Center with many small businesses around it until consolidation with other towns formed Downtown Detroit following World War II when industry began moving into new areas across I-94 southward away from downtown residential districts such as Harlem or Van Dyke (now Midtown Detroit). In 1951, when I-94 was widened at its current configuration including a new exit near Highland Park Road/I-75W this turned off Gratiot Avenue leading onto Emerald Road which crossed over into Washtenaw County providing more space for development; much like today's streetscape which has been gradually modified since then with signalized intersections altered or added while maintaining original elemental design characteristics such as large bodies of water feature(s) along either side while smaller parks are scattered throughout residential neighborhoods even within business districts) making it one stop shopping destination for residents from all parts of metro Detroit given its central location next to freeways like M1/M2/EASTbound trunklanes giving easy access to larger malls located just outside city limits without having to leave downtown core where residential areas have grown furtherurther out towards Interstate 295 suburban developments have replaced most if not all rural villages within commuting distance although some remain adjacent to urban cores

The city of Highland Park was originally founded by Abram VanBuren and his family on October 25th, 1868 as a small farming community on the eastern edge of Detroit. The VanBuren family quickly became popular due to their careful management of their land and their dedication to nature. They also ran a successful grocery store in the settlement which helped to attract other settlers to the area. By 1870, Highland Park had developed into an important regional center with a population of over 500 people. Over time, Highland Park changed considerably from its agricultural beginnings into an vibrant industrial city that enjoyed rapid growth during the late 19th century. In 1898, Cadillac manufacturer Henry Ford moved his operations from Dearborn Heights to begin production on his new car factory at River Rouge in what would become one of North America's largest manufacturing centers (and still operate today). This period saw some significant changes within the city however; many factories closed while others were converted into residential housing developments such as River Oaks or Lakeshore (now part of Royal Oak). Many influential individuals lived and worked within these confines including Ford himself who built much of his personal wealth through business ventures in downtown Detroit during this time period (he would eventual move back home to Dearborn Heights after purchasing over half a million acres there). During World War II, Highland Park played an integral role in helping support American forces throughout Europe due to its location close to key military bases (including RAF Mildenhall) as well as its ample access to foodstuffs and munitions necessary for war efforts. On September 15th 1942 – two days before Japan attacked Pearl Harbor – local citizens raised enough money via donations drive to purchase three heavy bombers used by USAAF pilots stationed at nearby Macomb Airfield – giving rise to what eventually became known as "the day before Pearl Harbor". After Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, aerial bombardment became increasingly difficult due to enemy activity near/around Highland Park; this led directly responsible government officials like President Franklin D Roosevelt order prominent property owners like Mr VanBuren not onlyto keep their properties undamaged but also make available additional acreage for military use should hostilities recommence(this policy continued until 1946). In 1944-1945 hundreds displaced Japanese Americans living adjacent to present-day Macomb County formed what is now called "The Japanese Canadian Citizens Committee" under leaderships like Seiji Ito (founder & first president) which fought tooth and nail against displacement camps set up near Toronto then Sault Ste Marie Ontario while also working diligently with Canada’s Vichy-era regime towards assimilation into Canadian society following World War II’s end However despite valiant efforts by numerous individuals & groups alike various aspects / conditions remained unchanged resulting in massive families being uprooted again & again all across Canada during early '50s (& 50 years later still going strong) culminating with large open air Expo '67 when more than 60%Japanese ancestry residents resided within boundaries now comprising portions of MI
