The village of Hazel Park grew up around three churches: First Methodist Church established in 1881, United Bible Societies' Strict Baptist Church founded in 1895 and Evangelical Lutheran Church erected in 1906. Other early residents include Jonas Hahnemann who Emigrated there with his family from Germany in 1815; he became postmaster at Hazel Green Township east of present day Lansingburgh; John Fenton who arrived as part of a group led by Simon Mathers along with other German colonists that traveled through what is now Holland County on their way to seek land northward; courtesan Anna Beeman came hereabouts between 1840-1845 following her escape from prison near Mackinac Island after serving time for prostitution charges she leveled against then-governor Cassander Lockwood during his administration.; lumberman Augustus Kelley moved into town about 1880 while working on his new sawmill located just east/northwest of downtown near what is now Old Main Road NW (present day Gratiot Avenue NW); Wm Ahern bought land southwest/northeast of town lot number 2 some years later but never constructed anything there., physician Augustus Ewing arrived hereabouts 1850s via Canada after serving duty at Fort Erie aboard HMS Aurora during the War Between North America and Spain.; doctor David Brownstein immigrated to this country circa 1865 when he enlisted as an enlisted man with Company K 24th Regiment New York Infantry under Captain Isaac Niles during US Invasion OF Mexico City campaign.; David Brownstein eventually became onehalf owner & president -with Cushman & Wakefield -of Union Canning Workshops Corporation based at 5200 N Huron Ave Ste 204 Dearborn MI 48126 (now known as Union Canning Industries Inc.) which built over 900 canneries throughout Michigan production including many notable brands like National Baking Co., American Weavers Guild etc.. Dr Brownstein also served as President pro tempore US Senate Committee investigating Hearings Relating To Internal Security Issues In The United States prior to its merger With Government Printing Office.. After Dr Brownstein's death approximately 1966 Andrew Mellon purchased Union Canning Workshops Corporation assets including facility at 5200 N Huron Ave Ste 204Dearborn MI 48126from Cushman & Wakefield for $1 million dollars.. From 1967 thru 1978 manufacturing operations were conducted outlandishlygo ahead inside newly built aluminum can factory building also known variously as 'Cannery Row', 'Aluminum Plant', or simply 'Cannery'; plant closed 1974 but functioned intermittently until 1984 when it was permanently closed due to economic recession.. Manufacturing operations ceased completely 1985 although remaining buildings still stand derelict today pending sale or demolition) .
