The name of Hazel Park comes from two different places: one was on the banks of the River Rouge, and the other was on a hill overlooking what is now downtown Hazel Park. The prefix "park" originated with a large tract of land that lay just east of present-day Hazel Park and included much of what is now Hazelwood Township and Warren Township. In 1892, an act by the Michigan legislature granted township status to all ceded lands west of Grand Rapids Road (now I-75). This made Hazel Park incorporated as a city on December 16, 1892. In 1907, when it became clear that Detroit would be expanding rapidly into central Michigans north side suburbs, then- Mayor Augustus Kelley offered to sell City Hall in Hazel Park for $15,000 which would have been more than any other municipality in Macomb County at that time. However because Kelley had no political experience or capital support within thecity government he could not bring it to fruition and abandoned it soon after. On July 1st 1912 voters approved incorporation of Elmira Township adjacent to present day Midland and ran off with $1 from each individual who voted in favor so they could set up their own election process without taking responsibility for anything that came afterward such as municipal services or building regulations which were controlled by Midland Township residents until 1924 when they were transferred over to Elmira Township due largely to tax issues between those two municipalities but also because Elmira's annexation into Detroit gave them control over much needed water resources within their township limits which allowed them to build new facilities such as recreational lakeside hotels etcetera while Midland continued providing core services such as streetlights and water mains until 1984 when they were finally taken away by Toledo Municipal Utility District when both cities merged intoDetroit under newly created Metro Detroit Incorporated Municipalities Act No 2294 signed on September 17th 1984 effective October 1st 1984 creating Wayne State University Campus adjacent to present day Midland thus giving Heights community its first major shopping center essentially complete Streetscape development started with demolition/replacement/installation/maintenance commenced in early 1990s following approval from City Council & resident groups

Hazel Park is a small town in the heart of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The community has been around since 1837, when it was organized as a village. It grew rapidly during the 19th century, thanks to its location on the navigable Straits of Mackinac and its rich land resources. In 1910, Hazel Park became an incorporated city. Today, the city is home to about 1,500 residents and is an important cultural and commercial center for the region. The town was founded by Captain James Kapp and his brother Alexander Kapp on November 12, 1837, at what is now known as Eastern Boulevard and Higgins Road. The family built a log cabin named “Kapp’s Home” on this site. By 1840, Captain Kapp had erected a frame courthouse and jail in what is now downtown Hazel Park. In that year, he also purchased 4 square miles (10 km2) of land east of present-day Hazel Park from David Dixon for $1 million dollars ($10 million today). This area would become known as Maple Woods Township. During the 19th century, Hazel Park thrived as one of Upper Michigan’s leading agricultural communities due to its fertile land and access to major waterways. lumber mills were located here throughout the early 20th century; however they went out of business in the 1920s due to competition from more efficient mills in other locations statewide. However, during World War II Hazel Park played an important role as a munitions plant; it produced aluminum cans for United States soldiers overseas. After the war ended in 1945, businesses slowly began returning to Hazel Park until it reached its current level of prosperity in the late 1990s through heavy investment by Mayor John Wojtaszek and City Councilmember Byron Browning Sr.. In 2010, Mayor Wojtaszek announced plans for development along State Street which would include luxury housing developments with storefront space atop them – becoming one of only a few towns ( besides Lansing) in Michigan with this type of development density outside of larger urban areas such as Detroit or Ann Arbor
