Hazel Park is a city in, and the county seat of Muskegon County, Michigan. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wixom Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Hazel Park were French voyageurs who passed through in 1692. They named it "Aigle Rock" after an eagle that had been sighted by them on their way from Montreal to Detroit. The first permanent settlers were two brothers, Nicholas Haggerty and John Haggerty, who came to live near the mouth of the Huron River in 1777. They built a cabin on what is now Main Street and renamed it "Hazel Park". By 1800, there were over fifty people living in Hazel Park. In 1836, Appleton Township was created from parts ofMuskegon Township and Hazel Park became its township seat. In 1837, two more townships were added to Muskegon County: Marinette (now East Midland) and Holland (now West Holland). On December 12 of that year, Hazel Park became a city when oak trees were brought into town for use as streetlights by Mayor George Fenton. In 1849 downtown was completed with granite quarries opening nearby; until then all civic buildings had been built out of wood or straw huts. When Michigan achieved statehood in 1867, Hazel Park became one of the first cities in the state because it lay within Lansing's original territory as well as being contiguous with other newly organized townships such as Mackinac Island Borough and Gratiot Island Borough which made up Michigan's new Northwest Territory following the American Civil War. The first mayor of Hazel Park was Cushman Sargent elected on November 3rd 1867 after tendering his resignation from Eatonville Township due to financial difficulties leading up to its annexation into Lansing by statehood On July 1st 1870 three additional townships – Snyder Heights (now White Cloud), Clinton Heights (now Clinton), and Morenci – merged into Muskegon County under its new form: Muskegon Heights No 2 took effect on July 1st 1870 while Morenci No 1 followed on October 15th 1870 .
