In 1965, Hazel Park united with neighboring South Holland Township to form the Village of South Holland Township Incorporated merger which then merged into nearby Gratiot Township in 1986. The village has since grown again with annexations from other villages within Muskegon County and also from Kentland Township in Washtenaw County to the south and east; this has caused some confusion among residents about their separate municipalities' boundaries - for example Gratiot Township covers more territory than either South Holland or Hazel Park does! Today's population of 2,500 arrives primarily through commuting to Grand Rapids or Bay City; however there are also several hundred people who commute out to Howell for jobs at Ford Motor Company or elsewhere in southeastern Michigan's automotive industry. Hazel Park is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located about 20 miles northeast of Detroit on State Road 7. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Hazel Park was first settled in 1836 and became a village in 1868. The village incorporated as a city in 1903 and again as a town in 1967. It is now an unincorporated community within Dearborn County. The origin of the name "Hazel Park" is unknown, but it likely comes from the abundance of hazelnuts (a type of tree) in what is today the city limits. The first settlers were farmers who grew wheat, oats, potatoes, chickens and flowers near their homes on fertile ground that still stands today. By 1860, there were over 100 people living in Hazel Park and it had become an important part of the business district between Detroit and Grand Rapids. In 1863-64 General John Pemberton visited Hazel Park to assess its needs for transportation links between Detroit and other sections of Michigan; he recommended that Hazel Park be moved to create more space for commerce within its limits so development could continue unimpeded by others nearby on Rouge River Road/Highway 9W which then connected Detroit with Ann Arbor via Highway 15W which ran through present-day EasternDetroit suburbs including Hazel Park In 1903 City Council decided to annex neighboring villages of Hollandale (founded 1886), Westland (1889), Birch Run (1896), Beechwood Heights (1901) and Northfield (1906). This annexation increased total population to 1,996 people with a professional staff consisting mostly of teachers from four schools: Jackson Elementary School opened 1893; Highland High School opened 1909; Highland Junior High School opened 1912; Bellefontaine Intermediate Schoolopened 1916 The growth during this time led to automobiles becoming increasingly popular among residents as they allowed easier access to services not possible before such as grocery shopping In 1967 when HazelPark merged into Dearborn Township it remaining an unincorporated community with its own police department until it joined Dearborn County effective January 1st 1978

The population reached over 10,000 by 1930 but declined thereafter due to decreases in industry and trade within Michigan and elsewhere throughout the country. A new industrial park was developed in nearby Muskegon Heights after World War II; however, Hazel Park's decline continued until around 1990 when it began experiencing significant revitalization with an increased focus on commercial development as well as art galleries and other cultural institutions
