Hazel Park is a small town in the Grand Rapids-Warren County metropolitan area of Michigan. It is located on the west bank of the Huron River, about 12 miles (19 km) north of downtown Grand Rapids and 10 miles (16 km) east of Detroit. The population was 9,744 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settlers in what is now Hazel Park were farmers who arrived around 1800. By 1824, a sawmill had been built by John Fenton and his son George, and by 1830, there were two stores in Hazel Park. In 1835, Isaac Dunham set up a grist mill on the riverbank southwest of present-day Hazel Park. One year later, he sold his interest in the mill to John Ladd for $1,000 cash plus an acre (0.40 ha) of land for grinding meal into flour. By 1840, there were six families living in Hazel Park: Dunhams, Ladds, Smiths, MacLarens/Mackenzies/Whytes/Watersons etc., with total farmland holdings totaling approximately 200 acres (.60 ha). In 1845–46,[2] Colonel Hugh Chalmers laid out a townsite here on land that he donated from his estate near Cadillac to support development as a trading post and center for fur trade operations between Detroit and Grand rapids.[3] At that time it was one of only three townships or villages along Michigan's Upper Peninsula—including Mackinaw City proper—that did not yet have its own courthouse or jail; instead all law enforcement duties were provided by Chalmers' "township court." When Kalamazoo opened its city limits to settlement in1849,[4] Chalmers' gift became city property and continued to support township activities until 1860 when it was annexed into Kalamazoo proper.[5] Hazel Park's history dates back even earlier than that: according to tradition,[6][7][8][9][10] early settlers named their village after two sisters they met while grazing their horses near present-day Maple Grove Township on Decatur Creek during an Indian battle scene tourney: "Hazel" because of her golden hair[11], "Park" because she captured many game animals with her bow & arrow[12], and "Trail" because she ran away from her pursuers when they tried to capture her.[13][14] After settler James Grieve acquired 640 acres (248 ha) adjacent to current-day Old Hickory Road northeast of town in 1865,[15][16] development began rapidly; within five years almost all the original buildings had been erected: homesites included today's General Mills Building which housed grocery store services until 1915 when it burned down; Grieve House which served as courthouse from 1865 until 1886; Hageman Block which functioned as schoolhouse from 1870 until 1903; Griggs Block which served as Garage from 1876 til 1909; Town Hall building which still stands today (renovated 1978–1981); Masonic Lodge #2 building also extant on old grant including meeting room circa 1861–1864[17]; Millstream Drive entrance driveway currently being reconstructed over 540 feet (−150 m)[18]; Wagon Wheel house originally built c 1850 but demolished c 1910++; Five Mile Rd.; Elmwood Cemetery now located just east off US 131 across street from Friends Church Prairie Schooling Center Some residents moved away during World War II while others simply refused service in military camps nearby such as Livingston Manor or Stryker Field Campground south of town

Hazel Park was first settled in 1836 by John Hazel and his family. The town was named for a hazelnut tree that grew near their home. By 1850, the population had grown to about 100 people. The town was incorporated in 1853. In 1879, the United States Military Academy moved to Hazel Park from West Point and the post office was renamed after them. The school closed in 1906 and the building burned down in 1957. After the fire, new buildings were built on the original site and a small park was developed around it. In 1976, Hazel Park became an unincorporated community when its residents opted out of having their own government. Today, the community is still part of Muskegon County and has a population of about 350 people.
Hazel Park was founded in 1836, and became a town in 1857. The first post office was established in Hazel Park in 1837. In 1850, the town of Hazel Park received its charter from the Michigan General Assembly. In 1865, the Central Railroad of Michigan began to arrive at Hazel Park, and eventually helped make it an important center for transportation within the region.
