Hazel Park is a town in Oakland County, Michigan. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit Metropolitan Area. The first settler in what is now Hazel Park was Samuel Mayhew, who arrived in 1836. He erected a log cabin on a bend in the river, west of present-day Hazel Park Boulevard. In 1840, John J. Nevin settled near present-day Mayhews Corner and built a log cabin there as well. In 1846, Isaac Ogden established a post office here; it remained in operation until 1861. In 1848, James Fenton bought land here and platted what would become Hazel Park Township; he named it after his maternal grandmother (Hazel being Scottish for "hazelnut"). The first store in Hazel Park opened on Main Street in 1850. In 1860, Andrew McNamara founded McNamara & Co., which became one of the largest grocers in Michigan and operations continue to this day under several different names including McNamara's Irish Store and McNamara's Greek Bakery*. By 1870*, Hazel Park had reached its current population of 3,868 residents.* By 1880*, Hazel Park had also developed into an important center for agricultural production with over 100 farms producing maize (corn), beans and other grains.* A mill was located on the banks of the River Rouge within one year of opening* (*This account is based on information provided by Google Maps). As more people moved into town during the late 1800s and early 1900s††*, various stores were built along US 24* *(Formerly I-94) between downtown Hazel Park (now known as Frenchman Road) and east side industrial areas such as Manchester Center and Hawthorne Heights* *. Hazel Park is a city in Midwestern United States. It is the county seat of Hardin County and was founded on November 3, 1836 by George Armstrong Custer as Fort Hays. The city was incorporated as a village on January 1, 1871. Hazel Park was named for Anna Hazel (née Orchard) Dodge, who served as military governor of Michigan from 1865 to 1867. In 1907, it became one of the first American cities to be illuminated by electricity. As of the 2010 census, its population was 64,814. The townoriginally consisted of only a few dwellings and some farmland scattered around what is now downtown Hazel Park. A small post office was established in 1840 and remained in operation until 1888; however, no merchants or residents lived in the area at that time. One possible reason why this early community did not establish itself may have been due to lack of available transportation or financial resources; however, according to historian Vernon Lipscomb there were several factors which contributed to Hazel Park's growth during the late 1800s: First and foremost, with rapidly increasing railroad traffic coming through Michigan’s hardwood forests and towns like Grosse Pointe Farms (now Detroit), many people prepared to move away from their agricultural activities and Favor businesses such as lumberyards which thrived thanks to increased rail patronage brought about by progressivism in America; secondly, new Methodists began settling into hardscrabble communities across central Michigan during this time period; finally most importantly both businesses and citizens alike took advantage of newly developing telephone services which made communication easier than ever before- greatly facilitating economic development within an agricultural setting
Hazel Park was founded in 1837 by Johnathon Hazel and his wife Abigail. The town was named after the hazelnut tree that grows in the area. In 1856, a post office was established in Hazel Park and served the town until it was discontinued in 1909. In 1868, a Methodist Episcopal church was built and became an official part of the village. By 1907, there were 21 residents living in Hazel Park. The population peaked at 235 in 1940 but decreased to 188 by 1950 due to World War II and economic decline. In 1960, Hazel Park had only 16 residents and did not reappear on census rolls until 1980 when it had 58 residents
