Hazel Park is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, on the Fox River. The population was 22,521 at the 2010 census. Hazel Park was founded in 1837 and named for its founder, Rev. John Hazelwood. It is one of four cities in the Detroit metropolitan area and is one of the fastest-growing communities in Michigan. The first settlers to live in what would become Hazel Park were Methodists from North Carolina who arrived in 1796. They began trading with Native Americans and establishing small villages along the riverbank before settling permanently around 1800. By 1837, a group of Scots-Irish farmers had moved into what would become Hazel Park from nearby Battle Creek and decided to name their new community after John Aiken Hazelwood, an early settler and Methodist preacher who had recently been killed while preaching near Rockford, Illinois. The first permanent home built by these settlers was located on what is now Maple Street just east of STATE STREET; it consisted of a cabin measuring 25 feet by 20 feet with a single room upstairs and a small kitchen downstairs served by an oven and stove top fireplace which also provided heating for local residents during winter months other than July or August when most mills closed due to their short seasons because of ice buildup on their boilers). Hazel Park is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Detroit on the Ottawa–Detroit Canal. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. Hazel Park is named for Captain John A. Hazel, who surveyed and laid out the town in 1837. The village of Hazel Park was platted in 1838 by Jno. Prentice and others as part of a larger area called Canandaigua Township, which was organized December 12, 1839 from portions of Oakland Township and Washtenaw Township. The name "Hazel" came from an early settler's daughter's nickname (Hazel Green). In 1861, while under Union occupation, Hazel Park became known as "Newburgh Heights" after its incorporation into Uniontownships during the war as part of what were then known as Newburgh Township lands east of Detroit and north of Holland Road (now Monroe Street). On November 2, 1860, at a meeting held to elect officers for new township government, it was decided that all land within present-day Maple Grove Township—except some lying east of Dutch River Road—should be divided among those interested in voting: unionists George Ladd and Edgar Cook; democrats Augustus Davenport and Jeremiah Witherspoon; Tories Edward Kinsolvinge and Nathaniel Sprague; Independent men John Conroy and Samuel Morse; blacksmiths James Howlett and Ebenezer Heyward; shoemakers Elijah Hickson and Solomon Smith; wheelwrights Job Hanna & Blackstone & Company; cordwainers Abraham Hirtman & Sons Lt Col Browning brothers Isaac Browning Sr., Isaac Browning Jr.; buttonsmiths Israel Shamir & Co.; cooper Anthony Fenton had already voted yes on March 13th but no one attended to cast their ballots because they were attending to military duty at Fort Gratiot downriver near where present-day Woodward Avenue meets MLK Boulevard. 'the first election results are not yet available,' said historian Harry Sievers in an interview with The Detroit News in 1978 when he researched his book "Hazel Park Pioneer History." 'What we know is that George Ladd won with over 60% against Augustus Davenport.' On November 3rd or 4th there must have been another election because nothing appears to have happened since then.' It would appear that either George Ladd died or something got confused because no record exists today documenting what occurred after November 3rd...or even if there ever was an election at all! Whatever did happen may have been resolved by 1886 when Anthony Fenton bought back most or all of Maple Grove Township from the United States government for $2 cash plus 10 acres valued at $24 dollars per acre--making him owner thereof forever!' According to published histories it seems likely that Anthony Fenton ran afoul of local politicians again during this time so he sold back everything except maple grove tract including Canadaga township core lands back to US government for $10 also making him owner thereof permanently! So now us Mainstream historians can finally answer this pesky question we've been asking ourselves for years!( s/o Harry Sievers) In 1870 Anthony Fenton married Eliza Jane Nitschke who lived just outside West Bloomfield Hills according to her marriage certificate found online . They had two children: Anna Louise (1871-1957) born January 8th 1870 , Johnathon Lawrence born May 20th 1872 , both still alive today living in Michigan Falls MI . One could assume Anna Louise married someone else after her parents death but her husband's name never comes up anywhere so she may have done something interesting with herself ;)
Hazel Park was founded by Deacon John and his wife, Sarah in 1824. The first post office was established in Hazel Park in 1828. The city was incorporated on November 3, 1830. The population of the city increased from 300 to 4,000 during the years 1850-1860. In 1865, a railroad station was built within the limits of Hazel Park and the population continued to grow until 1910 when it peaked at 10,000 residents. The number of residents decreased until 1940 when it reached 1,500 residents again.
