He named it Nouvelle-Angoulême after his home country, Angoulême in France In 1814, John Denny founded Denny's Mills just outside present day Hazel Park on the banks of the Rouge River which served as headquarters for his milling operations until 1827 when he moved to Dowagiac Junction near modern-day Monroe. In 1847, Jens Jensen established an sawmill and gristmill on White Street east ofpresent day Hazel Park before moving them to their current location north of Woodward Avenue in 1852 A store opened in1859 by Ebenezer Higgins and soon became one of the most important mercantile properties in town with over 40 stores closed or converted into residences over time including 10 built by architect Alexander Sullivan between 1865 and 1870 which still stand today. In 1912 Gertrude Hildebrandt organized a Ladies Auxiliary Club whose meetings were held at her home until its demolition in 1954 leaving behind evidence that Hudson's Bay Company had been operating here during that time The city's first school was built on Harrison Street west side from current-day Griggs Road east to Clinton Street in 1893/94 with classes starting from kindergarten through eighth grade Fathers Michael Coughlin (1904) and Joseph McGrath (1907) started Sacred Heart Ministries which continues today as Catholic Charities United Way with both men serving as Co- Founders Hazel Park began annexing neighboring communities including Monroe Township on November 3rd, 1907 becoming an incorporated municipality under name "Oakland County"

In 1925, a dam was constructed along the Muskegon River to create Lake Huron and provide water for Hazel Park Township's schools and other residents. The dam also created the city of HazelPark across from it on its southern border
