Hazel Park is located on the southern border of Macomb County and is bordered by the city of Detroit to the east, Clinton Township to the south, and Hillsdale Township to the west. According to the 2010 census, Hazel Park has a total area of , all land. The history of Hazel Park dates back to 1872 when General George Washington Dixon founded what would become Hazel Park on land that he had purchased from the Ottawa Indians. The name "Hazel" came from a Native American word meaning "happy." In 1875 during an agricultural fair held at Belle Isle in Detroit, Dixon met Major John Saginaw who offered him land for his military road between Detroit and Harper Woods which became known as "Dixon's Road". Dixon donated $10 000 for school construction within three years of its founding. In 1887, Dixon donated 9 acres (3 ha) for parkland which became Hazel Park State Recreation Area today.
