Hazel Park is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and it is the county seat of Wayne County. The population was 13,569 at the 2010 census. The name Hazel Park comes from the Hazelnut tree, which is found in the city's downtown area. The first inhabitants of what is now Hazel Park were Native Americans who hunted and gathered nuts from the trees that grew around them. In 1812, John Davenport founded Davenport Land Company and donated land to build a town on it for his family and their friends. That same year, Peter Minuit bought 5,000 acres (20 km2) of this land from John Davenport for $10 per acre ($2 million at current prices). By 1800, there were over 25 families living in or near present-day Hazel Park. In 1824, General George Washington ordered MajorGeneral David Hull to take possession of all new territory acquired by the United States since its independence from Great Britain. On July 16th, 1824 Hull received instructions to erect a military post at what is now Hazel Park with "the object of keeping Indians in check" as part of these orders. A few days later he arrived at what is now known as Ford City after traveling through Detroit on his way to his posts across Indiana and Ohio Valley Theater during the American Civil War. He named this post Fort Detroit because it was adjacent to present day Ford City on Dearborn River (now called Huron River). The post functioned intermittently until 1830 when General Hull moved his headquarters northward along Canadian Highway 7 into what is now Rouge Township while continuing operations outposts at Ford City and other sites throughout Michigan's Upper Peninsula region including Grand Rapids (then spelled Greenville) and Holland (then spelled Houghton). DuringMichigan's Black Hawk War (1870-71), forces led by General Philip Sheridan advanced onto Indian Territory northwest of present-day Toledo under cover of darkness on November 17th 1870 - one week before Thanksgiving - seeking revenge for raids committed by Tecumseh during that war weeks earlier against settlers living near Dresden Mission Ruins east of Toledo where many black men had been taken captive and sold into slavery.$ When news reached Canada about this effort--and subsequent pursuit by Ulysses S Grant's army--Canadian troops arrived en route from Kingston Landing westward via Mackinac Island just prior to nightfall on November 19th 1870; they encountered no resistance as most residents had evacuated/ fled before hostilities began.$ This event has been cited as one reason why Canada became an international power during that period.$ It should be noted that Tecumseh himself did not take up arms against North America$ instead he directed warriors against white settlers located within Indian Territory rather than those living beyond its borders$$ For more information see: History Of Michigan#Black Hawk War
