Harper Woods is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is part of the Grand Rapids metropolitan area, and has a population of just over 7,000 people as of the 2010 census. The community was established in 1824 when pioneer John Harper settled in what is now Harper Woods Township. The township was organized in 1834 and became an independent municipality within Michigan in 1907. Harper Woods is located on the south shore of Lake Huron, east of downtown Grand Rapids, and west of I-75. The name "Harper Woods" originated from John Harper's original land grant which included much of today's township and some adjacent rural areas. The first settler near present-day Harper Woods was George Thatcher who built a cabin on Hubbard Lake about 1800. In 1824, John Harper moved his family to what is now Harper Woods Township from their original home at Spring Grove on the Ottawa River where they had been living for several years because there were no woods nearby suitable for farming operations. The first school in what is now Harper Woods Township was built on Fairlane Road about 1830 by teacher James Hargrave with help from local farmer David Lewisohns donated property that he purchased from Nicholas Biddlebeck for $10 per acre (equivalent to $2 per sq ft at current prices). By 1840, one school building had been erected and classes were held regularly throughout the year inside or outside during periods when it could be rented out to other residents or businesses for special occasions such as fairs or funerals etc.. A new school building was completed in 1852 by contractor Isaac Nims with input from local Masonic Lodge #1 attendees who provided labor including making fireplaces out of logs heated with coals brought downriver each day while working on site. In 1854, postmaster Samuel Calkins donated land south of present-day Main Street off Seventh Avenue to build a depot serving settlers along the Ottawa River coming into this region during the Indiana Purchase Period boundary changes made pursuant to President James Kents order following victory at Battle Creek against Ulysses S Grant’s forces that summer night known as “the Great Lakes Campaign” under Lt.-Gov.(then) Edward Everett Ellice Jr., 3rd Earl Of Huntingdon Later that same year, Stroudsburg businessman Israel Payson donated 1/4 mile (0 .8 km) north along Seventh Avenue between Main Street and State Road 646 towards Dowagiac County towards Escanaba also becoming part of Harpers Landing Borough soon after On October 15th 1860 cornerstone was laid for new church located at corner Second Avenue & Main Street under joint auspicesof Revd Dr Elijah Thomas & Revd Dr John Sibley Sr Reverend Presbyterians First Congregational Church started services Wednesdays @ 7 PM until 1865 which then changed hands 4 times before being acquired by Brethren Zion Congregation member Mrs Anna Malcomson Nov 10 1865 resulting in her donation back to Brethren Zion Congregation which then leased it back to Mrs Anna Malcomson Dec 5 1870 ending its affiliation with First Congregational Church prior to its final sale Apr 16 1880 . With changes taking place nationally due largely to increased postage rates associated with American Civil War effortsorgeous stone tablet still remains today marking location where church began services ..... Harper Woods is a small town in the heart of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, located about 31 miles northeast of Lansing on State Highway 11. The population was 1,695 at the 2000 census. The community was founded in 1853 by pioneers from Canada who had discovered the area while exploring for land to ranch. The name Harper Woods came from John Harper, one of the early settlers and a fur trader with the Hudson's Bay Company. In 1881, when US 12 was designated as County Road 11 (now US 231), Harper Woods became part of that highway system. It remained that way until it was transferred to county government in 1957. Today, Harper Woods is a quiet community with a rich history that can be found in its buildings and residents. The town began as an agricultural center with sheep and cattle herding being some of its primary industries until around 1920 when aluminum production began to dominate the economy. That year, the first post office opened in Harper Woods and has been functioning continuously since then. Today, many businesses are located within or near Harper Woods such as Applebees restaurant, flowers store, gas station/convenience store and several homesbuilder/developers including two-time winner of home design show Builder's Builders Awards - David Luchansky & Associates Inc., which built over 170 homes between 1990-2004; and Homebuilders Trust Co., which has constructed over 350 homes in Harpers Woods since 1985. A number of museums are also located within or close to Harper Woods such as local history museum “The Pioneer Village” which exhibits vintage farm equipment dating back to 1840s; natural resources museum “The Mines” exhibiting fossils from around Michigan; art gallery called “Harper Wood Gallery” featuring local artists working primarily oil paintings and sculpture; library "The Colonial Library" serving both municipal government functions as well as providing educational materials on local subjects like agriculture and history; chapel "Church Of Our Lady Of Mount Carmel" built in 1903 on site of an earlier Unitarian church destroyed by fire during prohibition era; golf course operated by private club named "Cumberland Hills Country Club". There is also a large parkazione run by Township Government that features hiking trails, playgrounds, basketball court/volleyball court etc.; small shopping mall anchored by Macy's - one block north of township limits - contains several convenience stores (Target & Walmart) along with restaurants (Pizza Hut & Taco Bell).
In 1837, Harper Woods was organized as a town in the Michigan Territory. The first settler in Harper Woods was John Harper, who arrived in 1837. In 1840, the town had a population of just five people. The first school in Harper Woods was built in 1840. It burned down in 1845, but was rebuilt and served as the town's only school until it burned down again in 1869. In 1865, Harper Woods became the seat of government for Wayne County, Michigan. In 1870, the town had a population of 25 people and it is said that "the business men were all farmers." The first mill in Harper Woods was built by Isaac Hixon around this time. It would eventually be replaced by the current mill complex around 1860-1870. The post office at Harper Woods opened on July 1, 1850. This was followed by the first store on October 9th of that year. The original postmaster General for Wayne County at this time was Elijah Harding. On December 3rd 1870, George Washington Van Dyke moved from his home near Detroit to become the new Postmaster General for Wayne County after being appointed by Governor Sanborn during his term as secretary of state pursuant to an act passed upon motion made by Mr John A Strothers (a representative from Clark county). Mr Van Dyke's appointment reflected increasing concern about mail delivery through western Michigan due to problems with transportation routes and inadequate facilities along U S Route 12 which crossed into Canada beyond Detroit limits
