Harper Woods is a small town located in the lower peninsula of Michigan, about 30 miles northwest of Detroit. The population was 3,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Flint Hills Community School District. The town was founded in 1827 by Presbyterians and Methodists, who arrived from Pennsylvania. The first post office was established in Harper Woods on December 15, 1827. The name Harper Woods was chosen because it contained a large wood near the settlement. The town developed around a Baptist church and school that were built in 1849-1850 and dedicated to Saint John Fisher. In 1860, Harper Woods became the first township in Wayne County to be organized under the new state constitution. In 1865, Harper Woods voters elected George Stephenson as their new mayor; he served for two terms before leaving for political reasons in 1868. In 1870, Harper Woods became an unincorporated community when it merged with nearby Springdale to form what is now known as Flint Hills Township (it had been part of Springdale since its incorporation). After World War II, many businesses moved away from Flint Hills due to competition from Detroit's downtown area; however, some businesses continued to operate into the early 21st century including Jiffy Lube and Sears Roebuck & Co.. After significant redevelopment efforts by local leaders starting in the late 2000s which included plans for a water park and other development projects failed to materialize due to lack of funding or opposition from residents and officials alike, much of Harpers Woods has seen decay over time with only a few remaining buildings still standing today: these include one elementary school building that still functions as a public school complex (now used as apartments), several churches/mosques/temples (all closed down), and an old theater which has been converted into residential housing units.

He served as U.S Ambassador to Japan from 1923-1928 and helped develop postwar America's relationship with that country.
