The town of Harper Woods, Michigan is located in the southern portion of the state of Michigan. The population of Harper Woods was 2,521 as of the 2010 census. The community is named for General John Harper who fought in the American Revolution. The town was formed from a merger between two small communities - Belle Isle and Harpers Ferry - on October 15, 1924. A post office called Harper Woods was established in 1925, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1978. The community had a population of 710 when it first incorporated as a village. It grew rapidly after incorporation and by 1950 had reached 1,100 residents. By 1970, however, the population had decreased to 617 because of suburbanization within the neighboring towns of Belle Isle and Harpers Ferry. In 2000, the town became an unincorporated community again under its current name.

Harper Woods, located in the town of Harper Heights, is a small community that has been around for over seventy years. The population was only ninety-eight when it was first settled in 1922, but by 1970 it had increased to more than one thousand residents. Harper Woods is named after Samuel Harper, who donated land to the community. The community was originally built on the site of a former mental institution. Today, the majority of the residences are single-family homes and there are also several businesses in the area. The history of Harper Woods begins with two families who moved to the area from other parts of Michigan in 1922. The Harpers were farmers and their home was located near what is now Oliver Road. They were followed by the Smiths in 1954 and they started occupying property that would later become known as Harper Woods. The earliest structures in this part of town were trailers made from logs and sheet metal held together with wire or nails. By 1960, most of the homes were built between Maple Street and Harding Avenue. That year, construction began on what would become known as “The Manor” which remains one of Harper Woods’ most popular attractions today. In 1971, Samuel Harper died and his estate donated sixty acres within walking distance of his home to make way for a shopping center called “The Commons” which still stands today across from Old Main Elementary School. This development helped increase traffic congestion within boundaries that had long been considered off limits due to its location next to an active military base! In 2001, referendum results showed that voters wanted a new youth basketball arena built on lot adjacent to old commons school; this project finally came to fruition in 2010 and is now known as Little America Basketball Arena! Today, many people visit Harper woods because it offers peace and quiet despite being close to vibrant cities like Detroit or Lansing! There are also many outdoor activities available such as hiking or fishing depending on weather conditions!
The first settler in Harper Woods was John Harper who arrived in 1798. He and his family built a cabin on the present day east side of Harper Woods Road. In 1807, Jabez Clark located a post office at Harper Woods and named it after himself. The post office operated until 1835.
