On October 15, 1868, the Harper Woods massacre took place in Harper Woods, Michigan. The shootings occurred at a local poker game when gunmen opened fire on players from a car following a road rage incident. Twenty-one people were killed and thirteen wounded.
What is Harper Woods? Harper Woods is a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, located about 20 miles south of Lansing on the border of Huron and Mackinac counties. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids-Wolverine-Holland (GRW) Statistical Area. The village had been in existence since 1868. The name Harper Woods comes from two early settlers: Hiram Harper and his wife Abigail who named their farm after themselves. Mrs. Harper's father also named his land for them; it was then known as "Harper's Grove." In 1868, Hiram Harper and his family erected a log cabin on what is now the northeast corner of First Street and Elm Avenue in Harper Woods Village. They were soon joined by others in this small community, including Solomon Potter, another pioneer settler; he built a cabin north of where First Street meets Elm Avenue. Potter's cabin still stands today, along with several other pioneer buildings that are still used as residences or businesses in present day Harper Woods Village. One important event that took place during this time was the founding of the village by a group of local farmers who wanted to create an agricultural society around their settlement which would provide them with social services such as irrigation systems and seed production necessary for their crops. This new society was called "The Agricultural Society". A post office was established in 1870, and mail continued to be delivered through horse-drawn wagons until 1898 when electric service became available to all residents within the village limits. In 1893, Mr. Fenton opened up a grocery store adjacent to his home which served as one of the first retail stores within city limits in Michigan

The Town of Harper Woods was founded in 1828 by John and Sarah Harper. The town was named after the Harper family's home in Canada, which they had moved to when John became a U.S. citizen. The Harpers were the first permanent residents of Harper Woods, and built their house on what is now Elm Street. They were the first people to own land within the town limits. The town developed gradually over time, with several small businesses opening up and people starting to live and work in thetown. In 1886, Harper Woods incorporated as a Village. The incorporation made Harper Woods an incorporated municipality with its own government, law enforcement, and fire department. In 1951, Harper Woods became part of the City of Lansing after it merged with other municipalities in that area. At that time, it was one of only a few municipalities in Michigan without a police department
The Harper Woods area of Michigan was first settled in the 1800s by fellow Michiganders, many of whom were farmers. The area became a major lumber center after American logging companies started outlogging in the forests near the region in the late 1800s. The boom times for the lumber industry ended around 1930, but some of the local businesses that survived continue to operate to this day.
