In the early 1900s, many farmerspoke about moving their families to a new town closer to Detroit because of rising transportation costs and an expanding population in the area. However, no plans ever materialized. The current community was started when local parents decided to bring their children down to visit relatives living near Saginaw from 1937-39. By 1940 there were only 10 residents in Harper Woods; however, by 1945 there were 170 residents here! In 1951-1957 a large factory was built on the site of what is now BMO Harris Park. This factory produced MxA (machinery) for General Motors and other companies. Many people who worked at this plant have left or been replaced by newer generation workers over the years - it's one of only a few factories still standing today that employed such large numbers back then! There are several small shops and restaurants located throughout the community as well as two schools - one public and one private - which continue to provide education opportunities for locals and those visiting them.
