The early pioneers who lived in this area were eager to protect their families from Indian attacks. They armed themselves with whatever they could find and made their homes as secure as possible. The Town of Harper Woods was chartered on January 14, 1855. One of the primary purposes of the charter was to provide for a courthouse and jail, which were both built within a few years of each other. It is also interesting to note that the town’s first trustees were all men- including future Mayor John A. Droege and Justice Samuel Worthy – because at that time guns were not common items among average citizens. The first law passed by the town board in 1857 prohibited carrying any firearms without a license from local sheriff or magistrate. This law was repealed by an act passed by Congress on July 1, 1860, but it remained in effect until1871 when it was again repealed by an act passed by Congress on December 22nd of that year. In 1865 Harper Woods became one of six townships formed under the new Michigan Constitution (the others being Allegany Township, Antrim Township, Battle Creek Township, Clinton Township, East Lansing Township & Ottawa County). As part of these changes gun ownership increased among township residents and businesses alike due to concerns over federal raids into these areas during the Civil War era (specifically raids conducted by General George Armstrong Custer). One important event that took place in Harper Woods during this time period was the dedication of “The Post Office building” located at 6th Street and Hervey Road on October 3rd of 1865 (the building still stands today). This building served as both a post office and gun store until 1907 when it became known as The Armory Building (currently home to Renaissance Faire). Prior thereto it had been used as a schoolhouse before becoming occupied later that year by The Masonic Temple Inc., which later changed its name to The American Legion Post No 2 after World War II ended; however no evidence exists suggesting that either organization ever held any official status within Harper Woods at this time frame!

Harper Woods is a small town in the Grand Rapids-Muskegon area of Michigan. It is located on the east side of Muskegon Lake and has a population of approximately 1,500 people. The name Harper Woods was derived from the fact that there were many trees in the community that bore the name Harper. The first settlers in Harper Woods were farmers who arrived in 1825. They built homes around a small lake which they named after their families. The settlement grew rapidly, and by 1830 there were about 50 residents living in Harper Woods. By 1840, there were 300 residents living in Harper Woods. In 1850, three men settled in Harper Woods and started to grow corn, peas, and beans. They also built a cabin and began to sell goods from their produce store. In 1853, two men came to Harper Woods from Holland Township to start a lumber business. This business became very successful, and within five years the town had an inventory of over 2 million board feet of lumber! The town continued to grow rapidly during this time; by 1860 it had expanded to include 4 square miles! In 1865, the state Legislature passed legislation giving control of Muskegon County to Michigan! This created great challenges for the town as it felt it was no longer part of its county! However, with hard work and persistence (and some fundraising), Harper Woods was able to keep its status as a rural community until 1970 when Interstate 90 crossed its borders into muskegon County! At that point things changed; although many people still reside in rural areas across Michigan due mostly to cost savings associated with moving out of central cities (such as Detroit), more jobs have been created within urban areas than ever before! Today’s Harper Woods is one of America’s most vibrant communities – home to 1,500 citizens who enjoy excellent qualityof life while enjoying religious freedom guaranteed by our Constitution!!!

In 1984, Harper Woods became an internationally known center for racing horses for the Thoroughbred horse race track at Saginaw Valley Park. In 2001, it lost its status as a village when it merged with neighboring Muskegon Heights into one larger community under the name of Harper Woods Micropolitan Statistical Area
