Roosevelt for his role in helping make America Great Again during World War II. The Harper Woods area was originally a Muskoka region that was part of the Huronia village. The Huron people were the original occupants of what is now Harper Woods. The first European to arrive in this area was Jean Baptiste Le Moyne, who landed on Long Point in 1796. In 1807, the United States purchased land from the Hurons and named it Ford County after Major General James Ford, who had come to these shores as part of the Treaty of Greenville. The first settler in Harper Woods was John Sylvester, who arrived in 1828. It wasn’t until 1836 that George M. Dodge settled here and started farming. In 1846, David Haines built a cabin here and started trading with other Indians for goods and services from them. By 1850, there were several small farms in Harper Woods with about 20 families living there.
