The first settlers to invade what is now Harper Woods were farmers who journeyed from East Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in search of land to farm. They arrived at what is now Harper Woods on December 12, 1836 and named it after their friend James Harper who had come out earlier that year as one of the original settlers in this area. At first, most people worked on farms or trucking logs downriver to be exported to other parts of America. However, by 1840, there were already several small businesses in Harper Woods including a post office, bakery, blacksmith shop and two stores. By 1845 there were also three schools - one public school and two private schools - as well as a few houses. Because lumber production was so important to the town’s economy during its early days, manufactures such as shoeshine parlors (later renamed shoe stores) started opening up soon after Independence Day in 1847 when local mills stopped making bricks because they could no longer compete against imported goods. In order to keep pace with growing demand for products made within his own townspeople organized themselves into a “Lumber Workers” Union that met monthly at the local train depot until 1865 when it merged into Local 590-A United Steelworkers union which becamethe National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). One reason why manufacturing companies chose not to locate within immediate proximity of each other during this time period was because Lumber Workers Union members had strong political power due to their membership status within unions throughout most western states at that time. This clout helped them negotiated better wages and benefits for their workers while ensuring that competition was limited since any new company would have difficulty competing with those alreadyestablished within their industry groupings
The first permanent settler in Harper Woods was James Hickey, who arrived in 1824. He built a cabin on the banks of the river and named it Hickey's Falls. In 1830, John Dunnigan set up a sawmill and encountered difficulty getting water to power it because of the rapids on the River Lapeer. He built a dam across the river to solve this problem and named his new mill Dunnigan's Falls after himself. The town was founded in 1835 by Presbyterian settlers from Indiana. It quickly became an important center for lumber production, with mills producing wood for ships and buildings all over Michigan.
