How did the Harper Woods gun hammer come to be in the town of Harper Woods, Michigan? The answer to this question is a little complicated, but it all started with an old tool. In 1868, a man by the name of George J. Hager bought land in what is now Harper Woods. He named his property “Harper Woods” after his father-in-law, who had also given him some land in that area. Hager began manufacturing tools and nails at his home, and he soon became well known in the community for his quality products. Many people in Harper Woods were interested in buying or using old tools from Hager, so he started selling them through word of mouth. Eventually, he built a large store near where he lived that was known as the “Hagger Tool Store.” In addition to selling tools and hardware, Hager also sold ammunition and firearms. Over time, people in Harper Woods realized that they needed a way to bring firewood into town without having to go out on long walks! So they decided to build their own woodchuck sawmill! This mill quickly became one of the most important businesses in town because it supplied everyone with wood for their homes and businesses.

Harper Woods is a small town in the state of Michigan. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. It is located in Washtenaw County and is part of the Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community lies on the eastern edge of downtown Lansing and borders four other municipalities: Grand Rapids, Livonia, Warrensville Heights, and North Canton. There are two primary schools in Harper Woods—Oak Hills Elementary School, which serves students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade; and Harper Woods Middle School, which serves ninth through 12th grades. There are also three private academies—the Parkview Academy for Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade; the Belleview Academy for 9-12th grades; and Harbor View High School for 13-16th grades. The community was established as a gristmill village in 1837 by John Harper and his family. In 1854, it became an agricultural settlement when James O'Leary bought land here to raise corn and flour mills. In 1886, it became a full town when it was incorporated as a result of an act of the Michigan Legislature. In 1905, James Laughlin donated land to support a new water main that would provide water to all residents of the town except those living on Laughlin's estate near Cadillac. This gift made Harper Woods one of the first towns in Michigan to have electric lights &&&&&&&&&

The town of Harper Woods, Michigan was founded in 1834 by John Harper. The town grew quickly and soon had a population of around 100 people. In 1836, Harper married Sarah Jane played by Nelly Blythe. The couple would have six children together before Sarah Jane died in 1854. John Harper continued to live in the town until his death in 1896. After John Harpers death, the town passed into the hands of his wife's siblings and their children. In 1907, due to lack of resources and the Great Depression, Harper Woods merged with neighboring townships to form what is now known as Macomb County. John Harper was one of the pioneers who settled in what is now Macomb County and he is considered an important figure in the history of this county. He helped establish our country’s first school system and also built several homes here in Harper Woods. His legacy will live on for many years to come!
