The area now known as Harper Woods, Michigan was first settled in the early 1800s by the DeKalb County Native Americans. The land was part of the Ojibwe nation and the town of Harper Woods was founded by Chief Joseph on November 4, 1824. The town grew rapidly and soon became a important center for trade with other Native American communities. By 1830, Harper Woods had a population of over 100 people. In 1855, Congress passed an act designating all lands west of the lower Michigan River as Indian Territory. This measure led to increased tension between white settlers and the Native American occupants of this region. In 1863, General Philip Sheridan ordered General John Custer to attack what he believed were Indian encampments near present-day Harper Woods. Custer's forces were successful in destroying these camps and freeing many Indians from slavery. This event is generally considered to have started the Great Sioux War of 1865-1868. During World War II, ammunition production in Harper Woods increased significantly due to wartime demand for military munitions. Many factories were built in the area during this time including Armour Ammunition Company, Hammond Ammunition Company and Winchester Ammunition Company. Gadsden named it after his father-in-law, General James Halleck (1779-1849). The village became a popular spot for farmers and others seeking an exposed location for farming operations. After Halleck's death in 1851, his widow donated most of her holdings to the township as part of a gift to her husband's estate. In 1870, Lillie Whitney laid out this section of Muskegon Township on land that she had acquired from her late husband Adam Whitney Sr.. The community grew rapidly due to its location close to both major transportation arteries - US 12 and M-69 - as well as its easy access to natural resources such as lumbering and fishing opportunities. By 1901, local newspapers were reporting that "Harper Woods has reached its present size thanks largely to ...the construction by MrsLillie Whitney of commodious homesites along three miles [of] beautiful main street." In 1912, Harpers Ferry Dam was completed upstream of Harper Woods Village; this caused water levels in the Ottawa River below the dam to rise dramatically which created new habitats for fish and other aquatic creatures including bald eagles! Since 1970, when Congress passed legislation authorizing development within 25 miles (40 kilometers) of all U.S.-owned nuclear weapons sites under electric power production restrictions set forth by President Richard Nixon following revelations about U.S.-led secret bombings during the Vietnam War, many businesses have relocated their operations or been founded here – including Apple Inc., Ford Motor Co., McDonalds restaurants and Target Corporation among others!
