Harper Woods is a small town in Shiawassee County, Michigan. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name Harper Woods was given to the community by settlers who named their farm "Harper" after General John Harper, an American general during the War of 1812 who fought against British forces in that conflict. The first post office in Harper Woods was established on November 15, 1872. The community took its name from General John Harper and his family. The first store in Harper Woods was opened by W K Bennett on July 12, 1889. A grocery store and post office were both opened in 1903 by C H King and J M Greer respectively. A bank was also opened in 1903 by W K Bennett and J M Greer. In 1911, a coal mine was built near Harper Woods and it continued to be used until 1973 when it closed down due to low production levels. In 1924, the village became a school district with the opening of Maplewood Elementary School which had been constructed on land donated by Levi Strauss & Co.. In 1969, Hudson Middle School (now known as Washtenaw High School) opened and soon followed by Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School (now known as Stoney Creek Intermediate). It wasn’t until 1984 that Addison Trail Elementary School became open; this school served students from kindergarten through 8th grade until 2003 when it closed due to declining enrollment rates. On May 4th of 2006, Harper Woods celebrated its centennial with a picnic breakfast presentation headlined “100 Years Ago: What did we do?” along with displays about local history from various sources including oral history interviews conducted over the years with residents of Harper Woods as well as official records from township government dating back to 1872-2006! Today’s citizens of Harper Woods are proud members of our community and have worked hard during these past 100 years to maintain our traditions such as agriculture, civic engagement & modern technology

In 1908, the town had its first schoolhouse, which closed in 1951. The first grocery store opened in 1914 and the last store closed in 1984. The town developed around two railroad tracks that ran through it until they were abandoned in 1991. In 2003, Harper Woods voters passed a resolution to name their high school after Mildred Davis, who died on May 6th of that year from ovarian cancer at the age of 78 years old. On October 20th of that year, Harper Woods High School reopened with its new name: "Mildred Davis High School".
The Harper Woods area in Michigan was first settled by the French in the early 1700s. The area was named for Pierre-André Harper, a captain of the French force that invaded Canada in 1759. After landing at what is now Lake Huron, HarperWOODS encircled and destroyed an Indian village, driving the natives away. In 1763, British troops burned down the village after defeating the French forces. The settlement grew rapidly after this event and by 1800 it had a population of over 100 people. By 1814, however, when Michigan became a U.S. state, Harper Woods was abandoned and its residents moved to other parts of the state.
