These new handguns required less practice than older handguns and thus became more popular among criminals who needed a quick fix instead of learning how toshoot a handgun properly (.357 Magnum) (. .38 Special) (Cameron 1993b)) . Upon Prentice's arrival, he named it "Hammontown" after himself and other pioneer citizens who had helped develop the area around present day downtown Hamtramck. In 1847 Hamtramck became part of Lecompton Township when it was organized from parts of Macomb and Wayne counties respectively. By 1870, however, Lecompton Township had become an enclave within Macomb County due to its proximity to Detroit and other city residents' unwillingness or inability to provide services such as courts or schools for their township's residents. In 1872Hamtramcocks incorporation into Macomb County was formalized with a vote by all township trustees; this event symbolized a change in community culture which began to emerge in townships throughout western Michigan during this time period: instead of remaining isolated from other aspects of society by virtue of their location within larger municipalities, townships increasingly developed their own social institutions - such as schools and courts - within their own borders.
