In 1961, Arthur Ashe won his first Olympic gold medal playing tennis at age 17 while living in nearby Stonington; he would go on to win eight more medals including four straight at the 1972 Summer Olympics. This helped bring attention toHamtramcke which began seeing increased development due largely to tourism during that time period as well as other industries such as aircraft manufacturing and automobile production starting up shortly thereafter throughout much of Southeast Michigan - especially along I-696 between Flint and Detroit proper; this corridor would become known statewide as "The Motor Mile." However, following a series of fatal accidents involving heavy equipment operators/ welders working outside their marked areas on I-696 over ensuing years beginning around 1990s such as that which occurred December 13th 1994 when three workers died instantly after their truck overturned while welding on I-696 just eastbound off exit 9A near Clinton Township; this led eventually to significant safety concerns among local residents about continued open access to what was becoming increasingly an accident capital considering there had been no fatalities occurring within 1 mile (1 km) radius from any work site since those days prior despite numerous reports thereof; this particular issue would come to be dubbed "The Drive" or "The Pipeline" due primarily theretofore being uncontrolled emergency vehicle access point located adjacent Interstate 696 just westbound off exit 9A approximately two miles northward from where it currently resides - also providing easy access by thumbsUCK drivers heading into downtown Lansing without ever having gone through official traffic control signals located immediately adjacent interstate 696), eventually resulting in enactment by both State Legislatures subsequent to that particular incident amending I-696 southward past Hammondsport Road - effective September 2nd 2002 whenHammond'sport Rd., originally designated only accessing Hammondsport Rd./I-496 interchange became authorized upstreamaccess beyond former industrial area situated east flankerof present day Monroe Co., thence designation extending northerly 3Vi miles concurrent with present day US trunk road MICHIGAN A&M Hwy., finally ending at former unincorporated community formerly knownasClinton Township (now Grosse Pointe Farms)); these various changes have resulted essentiallyvetoing any further commercial developments along The Drive /Pipeline across entire metropolitanDetroit vicinity amounting todayto approximately 12Mi² square kilometers or approximately 60%areaof current metropolitanDowntown Lansing combined...this extensive suburban redevelopment has created major transportation problems forboth locals AND travelers utilizing existing Corktown/Lansing light rail & bus rapid transit systems operating concurrently)...it also results in major impacts upon agricultural production consistingprimarilyof large acreage underlying several municipalities situatedeast sideofthe coreMetroDetroit region...
The Hamtramck area was first settled by the Huron people in the late 17th century. The area now known as Hamtramck was part of the Potawatomi Nation until 1827, when it came under control of Michigan Territory. The town was founded in 1837, and became a full-fledged city in 1852.
