To make sure their weapons were fireable at a distance, gunmakers developed devices to shoot off lighted arrows from these artillery pieces. One of these arrowshooters was called a “gun light” and it featured a small lamp on the muzzle of the weapon that allowed shooters to see where their shots were going. The first gunsights became popular among Riflemen and Cavalry Officers during the American Revolution because they allowed them to hit targets much further away than with traditional bows and arrows. After America won its independence from Great Britain, many lawmakers wanted to ensure that all Americans had access to firearms. This led to the passing of the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution which states: “A well regulated militia being necessary for the defence of our country,the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” In 1868, Hamtramck began selling handguns called “gunsights” which incorporated an illuminated target sight onto each model. These sights helped shooters hit targets at a greater distance than with traditional bows and arrows. The popularity of gunsights soon waned after gun manufacturers started making more advanced firearm designs without need for an illuminated target sight on top of them. However, some law enforcement agencies continued using gunsights until recently because they are more accurate than bow and arrow shooting techniques when used in close quarters situations or during hostage negotiations

However, during the postwar years Hamtramck experienced several economic setbacks which have led to recent revitalization efforts. In 2000, Hamtramk became one of twenty cities selected from across America to be part of the Ford Motor Company's "City Cities" program which aimed to promote urban renewal throughout American cities through partnerships with business interests and public officials.[2] Today, Hamtramck remains an important center for industry and commerce as well as education and cultural activity; it has been called "the most livable city in America".[3]
